Well I wouldnt say this is a problem but just the same I would like it resolved. Ok here's the set up
PC #1: 3com 3C900b-tpo
PC #2 NetGeat FA311
both connected to the 4port Linksys Etherfast Router DHCP enabled
All the protocols are the same on both machines Tcp/ip and NetBeui bound to both NIC's. File and print sharing on both over NetBeui and not Tcp/ip. The problem is when I do a net view \\nodename on the 3com PC I get an Error 53 that says the computer name specified in the network path can not be located. I do the same on the NetGear PC and it shows the shares and life is great. I can see the 3com in NN on both machines and am able to use all shares on both PC's. The only problem seems to be with that one error message. I know I could just ignore it and use NN all the time but I like to use the DOS prompt for a quick view to see whats doin.
Sorry for the long post, any help is welcome.

Also one more question. Is it necessary to have the Netbeui protocol installed or can I just bind everything to TCP/IP? I am asking from both a security and functional standpoints.

This may sound like a stupid question, but are you using differant ip addys on each machine?

BTW: No need for NetBEUI at all, my home networks and all the networks I set up at the office use only TCP/IP if I can help it.

Naw Im using the same ip for all boxes. I figured out that the drivers win98 supplied for the 3Com card when installed apparently have a problem in a virtual box, so I put that card on the shelf and went and got me another Netgear(I really love this NIC). And I figure when I bring another box onto the network I'll just use the drivers that were supplied with the card and not with windows. As for the Netbeui thanks!! Thats what I thought but all the "tuts" on the WWW seem to be geared toward Host client setups and ICS with a software NAT soloution.
