View Full Version : RoadRunner and Networking

I need suggestions for a home network setup.
3 computers, (soon to have) RoadRunner cable modem.
Preferably, two of the computers would have full inbound and outbound access to the internet, and the third having outbound.
I've seen alot of setups that incorperate either a proxy server or a broadband router, but none seem to have full inbound and outbound operation.
I haven't seen any information on the performance of simply purchasing a second IP address, but it's a valid option if inbound and outbound operation are unhindered on the two computers I'm concerned about. Did anyone actually decide to pay the 10 dollars extra a month? :P
Suggestions?

I've looked around and there is quite a list of single-IP solutions.. but all of them limit the functionality of parts of or the whole network, which is completely and entirely out of the question.
What's a good setup for the multiple IP address solution?
The SpeedGuide page mentions the hardware setup (all computers connected to a hub, cable modem connected to a hub -- will a switch work? what're the differences between the two?), but there is no given information about the software setup. What information would I need to obtain from those tight-lipped bastards at RR, and when I obtain it, where do I put it to work for me?
Thanks in advance for any information.

A hud/switched or a router are the best
I know of .With a hub you just call rr
and tell them you want a extra Ip.That is
all there is to it.With a router it is allowed if it is for your own personal
use.I don't know if they will help you
due to they only run support for single
setups.Someone else might know the setup for that. But anytime you share 1ip there will
be a little lost in bandworth on each
computer.I use a Hub/Switched and two extra
Ips without loss. I am not sure because
I do not use a router but I think
you can set it up with mutiple Ips and get
the same results. There are a couple of sites
witch will explain different types of network
settings and may help you with your question.
One is [URL=http://www.timhiggens.com. I am not sure what the other one is someone else might
know.

That doesn't answer any of my questions. I'm aware of how I can spend 10 more dollars a month. What I need to know is how to configure this, since they state clearly that they offer absolutely no support.
I have RR and a newtork set up also. Right now I have 2 computers to a hub to a dl 701 router to the cable modem. Both machines work fine as far as interent browsing, email playing games. But, I cannot serve a game, host a game, my icq flickers on and off to my friends.. nothing but probs. Now the tech people tell me I can only have one port open per machine or some ****... I don't get it.. why have a router then. Im contemplating the second ip and setting up individual firewalls for each pc..Let me know if you find any netork solutions out cuz im desperate also.. email me.

OK heres the setup!
call for ip
they tell you ok but we wont help
plug cat 5 cable from cablemodem into hub uplink port (make sure its set for uplink)
plug computers into remaining ports of hub
set up computers for the cable modem (automaticly obtain ip here)
enjoy that $10 with your second user
ps excellent bandwidth on both, ive used software sharing, it leaves much to be desired, but it does allow for fair outbound( my #3 & #4 rigs are set up with sygate, and they send email, websurf, etc.)

Here's my setup...I have RR and just purchased a dsl/cbl router. Cable goes to cbl modem, cat5 from cbl modem to router, cat5 from router to hub or switch, cat5 from hub/switch to pc's. Router issues dynamic addresses to pc's that's not routable on the net, up to 32 pc's. No need to call RR for extra ip's, the router will assign an internal ip to each pc. Hope this helps...

As I said before in my other post. Go to www.timhiggens.com (http://www.timhiggens.com) . This site will explain all the different ways to setup networking, hubs and routers.
