View Full Version : Phoneline Networking Question
I was just curious if anyone knew if you could say have the same phone number in two different locations, couple miles apart, and network two computers on each end using home phoneline networking technology. Is this possible?
you can create a network over phone lines just as you can with the ordinary network card setup. only difference is the speed of data transfer. Dial up to the server and connect. NT has a good RAS that could be used.

Direct phone line network - Yes and no.
The RAS option was mentioned, but I'm not sure it is what you are talking about. That will give you a point to point connection directly to another PC, through the phone company switch, using modems as network devices. I think you are talking about setting up a network using the phone wires for ethernet.
It is possible to have 2 phone wires directly connected to eachother (two "dry pairs"), but you would need to set up your own network equipment to transmit over that distance. I know that the distance is WAY to long for standard ethernet, let alone unshielded twisted pair telephone wire.
The direct connection you are thinking of is already done for businesses, who connect to another branch (in town) with a T-1 or fractional T-1. The wire still goes through the local phone Central Office. It uses a different physical topology, and requires alot of equipment to put your ethernet network traffic across it.
I wish it were that easy though. Someday, fiber optics to ever home...someday...
