Are your network properties leaned out? As in removal of all unnecessary components?

I'd just have Client for MS, your NIC, dial up adapter with TCP only if you need a modem or VPN, NetBEUI as your client protocol bound to the NICs only, TCP/IP bound to your NICs, dial up adapters if needed, but un-checked in bindings to client for MS. No IPX unless you need it for some reason.

On the 9X machines, properties for file and print sharing, LMAnnounce turned off, and master browser disabled.
