Micker,

Your router should have a default ip address of 192.168.0.1, and all of the other computers on your lan can have ip addresses of 192.168.0.2 or greater. 192.168.0.1 is the default gateway. On your TCP/IP settings for each computer, you specify the router's ip address as the default gateway, and that's how the router knows to forward the url to the outside when you use your browser. If the router manufacturer assigns a different ip address(not likely), then you would use that address as the default gateway.

Most Cable/DSL Router has DHCP (SMC, Netgear, Dlink, Linksys, and more).

DHCP will assign and maintain the IP address automatically.

If you have this capability on your Router, enable DHCP.

In win98

Get into the Network Menu in Control Panel. Click on TCP/IP properties choose the IP address Tab check “Obtain IP address automatically", choose the Wins Configuration Tab, check Use DHCP.

And your are basically done.

I have 3 pcs and want to share my cable modem with all of them. I bought a router and want to be sure I hook it all up correctly.

Are there any guides I could read on the net or can anyone tell me what I will have to do to share the modem. I assume I connect cable modem to the router and give each pc a tcp/ip address. Any help would be appreciated :). Just trying to save myself a lot of time.

I see another thread with the same question now :). Well, I still have a question with the setup. I need to setup a unique tcp/ip address on each like 192.168.0.1? How do I need to set each web browser so they use the cable connection over the network?

It might be easy once I do it, but figure I could save some hassle if somebody has done this before and could give me a quick guide.
