Hi everyone,

2- If it were you which of the following computer you will hook the cable modem to

A. TYAN S1692DL - DUAL PII 266 - PC66 128 MB SDRAM - 10GB MAXTOR 5400 RPM - 9GB IBM 7200RPM - NETGEAR FA311 FAST ETHERNET CARD - #9 REVOLUTION 3D - DUAL BOOT WINME & WIN2K PRO (main application testing new program, browsing & downloading)

B. ABIT KA7 RAID - TBIRDS 800 NON OC - 256MB PC133 MUSHKIN HIGH PERF. 2 CAS2.2.2 - 2X IBM 30GB 75GXP NON RAID - 9GB QUANTUM FIREBALL KA+ - 3D PROPHET II MX RETAIL - INTEL PRO/100+ ETHERNET CARD - DUAL BOOT WINME & WIN2K PRO (main application 3D modeling and graphics)

3. How to setup the cable in such a way that will prevent people from accessing and destroying my hard drive, files etc.

Both computer is connecting thru a 5 port NewMedia LiveWire hub with an uplink port. I prefer not using any proxy software.

Im not sure about an online guide but once you get the router you would hook the cable modem to the WAN port and then hook the other computers into the router ports. Depending what kind of router you get some of them have built in switches which will eliminate the need for a Hub. the Linksys 4 post Cable/DSL router has a built in switch. Also most routers act as a firewall. A lot of people still prefer to run software firewalls on each computer as more protection. :)

And each brand of router does have it's own unique and quite easy to follow instrux. Take the Linksys for example, the easy setup guide even has pictures of your windows network configuration panels.

You plug the cable/dsl modem into the router, and each computer plugs into the router, so it's not a question of which computer you plug the modem into.

With only 2 computers, and a 4 port router, your existing hub is out of the picture.

Read this, it will educate you in the parameters that go with a Router.

Hub, Switch, Router, DHCP, LAN, WAN, NAT, etc. Or what do they want from my life I just want to share the Internet with my family. (http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=36&threadid=395000)

Then read the manual of your Router.

My SMC Baricade is AWSOME! By far the best piece of networking hardware (for the money) I have ever bought. The quick setup guide is kind of weak but complete instructions are in the readme file in MS Word & Adobe PDF formats, should you need them. ;)
