View Full Version : Windows XP network problem
I have windows xp installed on my server computer. I also have 2 other machines on my network running windows 98. All 3 machines can get on the internet. The problem is that in network neighborhood I cant see the computers. The 2 win98 comps can see each other but not the winXP machine. The winXP machine can see them but they cant see it. they all get on the internet through the winXP machine. ANy suggestions???
Have you run the networking wizrd under My netwok places. It's called Set Up A Home Network in XP.

Why look in network neighborhood to see other computers? I have been dealing with windows products for the last 5 years and there is 1 definate that my experience has shown me with microsoft products network wise -> don't rely on network neighborhood. Do a search for the computer name, ip address ect.
I have run into so many unknowns with network neighborhood that it really makes me laugh like a little girl. By the time you figure out why the hood isn't working - you have forgotten why you were using it in the 1st place.
Okay - let me get off my soapbox and put down my drink.
1) Are you able to locate the xp machine by doing a search or find?
2) What protocols are you using?
3) Are you using any type of firewall software?
4) Some versions releases of windows 2000 beta came with the registry settings such that the server would be hidden on the network - is that the same with xp?
5) can you get to any shares on the xp machine?
6) can you ping the xp machine without any issues?
I'll post more when I can think of more.
