I have been having trouble with one of my PC's running W98 loosing the internet connection. (I have two PC's running W98 through a Com21 modem, Netgear RT314 router and Charter Cable).

When I run the on board diagnostics program for the NIC, on the pass fail count I get the following results:
A. the I/O register pass count counts up by tens, no fail count.
B. The loopback test pass count stays and zero, and the fail count rises by tens.
C. The cable connection pass count rises by tens, no fail count.

Is the loopback test telling me my NIC is toast ? The NIC is a SMC EZcard model 1211.

Thanks !

Man I hate to sound stupid here, but I'm not quite sure. My email doesn't work either. If your asking if I can see the other computer on the network, I guess I never tried. I usually run winipcfg, renew all, and bang I'm back online. Should I be checking (when it happens) to see if I can see the other computer ? I have problems with the other computer logging off the network after it goes into sleep mode as well. I tried Microsoft's fix with netBEUI and logging off because of the sleep mode, but that didn't help either.

Here are all my setting under network-
1.Client for Microsoft networks
2. Dial up adapter
Bindings:netBEUI-dial up adapter
TCP/IP-dial up adapter
3. SMC EZ card 10/100 PCI (SMC1211 series)
Bindings:netBEUI-SMC EZ card
TCP/IP-SMC EZ card
4. NetBEUI-dial p adapter
Bindings:client for Microsoft networks
File & print sharing for above
5. NetBEUI-SMC EZ card
Bindings:client for microsoft networks
File & print sharing
6. TCP/IP-dial up adapter
IP address btain IP auto
WINS:disable
DNS: disable
Bindings: client for MS networks
7. TCP/IP-SMC EZ card
IP address:auto
WINS:disable
DNS:disable
Bindings: client for MS networks
file & print sharing
8. File & print sharing for MS networks

Thanks! On the troublesome PC, go to the TCP/IP properties and specify your provider's DNS servers under DNS. Input anything into the domain and host fields above.

Thought the least I could do is reply and let you know how this all turned out.

I replaced my NIC and all is well. I am having one problem with Zone Alarm not letting my email check for mail evry 5 minutes, but other than that, it appears the NIC was to blame.

Thanks for everyone's help !!! ;)
