Hi all,
I just got done installing a Netgear RT314 router, I can access the web fine, I can see each comp. in its own "Neighborhood network" but can't see either computer from the other?!?

Print and file sharing are setup on both. Both have TCP/IP & NetBEUI setup, What am I missing here?

I think I've hit a wall!!!

Thanks, Jay

If you wish to use NetBEUI as the LAN protocol, File and Printer Sharing and Client for MS Networks need to be bound to it instead of TCP/IP. Also, you need to share resources, and each computer needs a unique computer name and must be logged into.

What OSes are you running?

Plus make sure you have your drives setup for shareing. If don't already. ;)

Both NetBEUI and TCP/IP have checks infront of Client for Microsoft Networks &
File and print sharing for Microsoft Networks
under their respective bindings tab. Should only one of the protocols be used at a time?
If so which one is best to use? NetBEUI.

I have the HD shared on both systems as well as the printer on one of them.
I'm running Win 98SE on both computers.

Thanks, Jay

I had a similar problem to this when I setup my machines with a Linksys router using W98SE. I would go into Network Neighborhood from the desktop and they would only see themselves. I would then close that and open Windows Explorer and then navigate down to Network Neighborhood, and they were both there. I would then go back to Network Neighborhood from the desktop and they both would be there. Kinda weird.

So you are saying I need to Delete the TCP/IP
Protocol and just run with NetBEUI bound to Clients for MS Networking and File & Print sharing. I'll give that a try when I get home from work. Thanks
Both comp's running Win98SE

Did u ever find what was causing the problem?
and were you able to correct it?

actually i would go to Start then Run and type in this //nameofothercomputer then hit enter. if it pulls it up you know its good its just not showing in NN. If it is there then go to your desktop and create a shortcut then point it to the other computer.

I had a similiar problem and thats what I did and it works great :)

TCP/IP is required if the PC needs internet access, so just make sure File and Printer Sharing and Client for MS Networks is bound to NetBEUI and NOT TCP/IP, that is, if you wish to use NetBEUI as the LAN protocol.

Ok I removed the bindings in TCP\IP. Still cannot see the other computers on the LAN.

I pinged the nic, router and both computers both ways got good results. Now what do ya have up your sleeve? :-)

Thanks again for all your help

Oh yeah, What should the bindings be set at for the NIC card?

Neta trick Roody Thanks. Though on my PC I had to type \\namoeofothercomputer instead.

exqqqqme,

I never did find out why it did that. I am just glad I was able to figure out thats what it was doing. LOL.

Since you can ping the other machine and can get to the net it is probably a user issue. You must log into each machine and the accounts that you use must exist on both machines to browse. At least, that's what I've heard.

"Actually, they don't. However, they must be logged into and a unique computer name must be used on each PC."

I guess i'm lost! I thought that when I boot up and it ask's for User Name and Password that's what I was doing is Logging on. It shows my computers name and asks for a pw.
from start/Log off it shows the computer name. are these two seperate things? each computer has a unique name. Where do I setup and login to see the LAN?
.
Also after I removed the bindings from TCP/IP one of the computers is not showing up in it's own network N'hood. did the same thing on both systems.!

I realize these are stupid questions and I apologize for that, But like my subject line says NEWBIE to Networking

Thanks

Install NeBEUI on each PC, if you haven't already. Then, bind File/Printer Sharing AND Client for MS Networks to it. You may have to install Client for MS Networks. Now, unbind everything from TCP/IP. The LAN should now be functional.

For internet access, all you need is TCP/IP on each PC that requires 'net access. Do you have any other protocols, adapters or services install (check network properties)?

Ok, I did what you suggested and when I unbind the settings in TCP/IP the computer disappears from N.N. Happens on both comps.Even after several F5's they don't show.
The following are the network properties of both computers in the order in which they appear along with their bindings.

Client for MS Networks- both binds checked
3Com NIC both binds checked
Dialup Adapter both binds checked
NetBEUI>3COM NIC both binds checked
NetBEUI>Dialup Adapter> both binds checked
Dialup Adapter> both binds checked
TCP/IP>3COM NIC> both binds checked "When these are cleared there is no icon in N.N.
TCP/IP Dialup adapter
File and print sharing

Do you think I should give up on NetBEUI and just go with the TCP/IP protocol?

Seems the electronic Gremlins have a hold on me. I do need a new boat anchor. :-)

glc1,
I posted that info early this AM but it seems to have gotten lost, Here it is again.

When I did as you suggested and unbound TCP/IP>3com NIC, I lost the Comp. icon in N.N. Even after F5ing several times. When I redid the bindings the icon reappeared. But still could not see the other comp. in the Lan.

The following are my network settings in the order listed are
Client for MS networks Both bindings are checked.
3com Nic both checked
Dialup adapter Both bindings are checked.
NetBEUI>3con NIC both checked
NetBEUI Dialup Adapter both checked
Dialup Adapter both checked
TCP/IP>3com NIC both checked
TCP/IP Dialup adapter
File and Print Sharing

Seems when I unbind the TCP/IP>3com NIC
I lose the icon in neighborhood network. This happens on Both computers!
Maybe I should just use TCP/IP>3com NIC and not NetBEUI?

Is it possible that there is a wrong setting in the router it's self?

Those electronic gremlins are running rampant in my house!!!

WELLLL..... I tried removing what you said, no difference. Tried tcp/ip both checked, no netbeui... no difference. I then removed everything except my nic, reboot, go back and install
Client 4 MS NW
Adapter= tcp/ip only, bindings checked
File and Print Sharing

Still no icon in NN. Go back and add netbeui check both and icons back. Still can't see other computer.

Remove the following:

Dialup Adapter both binds checked (if you no longer use dial-up)
NetBEUI>Dialup Adapter> both binds checked
Dialup Adapter> both binds checked (if you no longer use dial-up)
TCP/IP Dialup adapter (if you no longer use dial-up)

Please disclose the bindings for the following: (Sorry, I haven't run 98 in quite some time. :))
Client for MS Networks- both binds checked
3Com NIC both binds checked
NetBEUI>3COM NIC both binds checked
TCP/IP>3COM NIC> both binds checked
