View Full Version : Can't get second PC to browse Internet

I have just got cable, and setup a Win98a box with two network cards, one for the cable and one for the network. I have a second computer with Windows 2000, which can see and ping the server computer.

Both machines have IP addresses assigned to the and the cable uses DHCP.

I installed WinRoute Lite 4, but could not get the Win2000 machine to browse the Internet, neither IE or Netscape. I also tried Sygate, with no luck there too.

I would prefer to use WinRoute, because it has its own firewall and seems easier to set up. WinRoute does notice that there is two computers connected to it, but just wont let me browse.

What IP info (address, DSN, gateway, etc.) are you using on the troublesome computer?

It's using an IP address 192.168.0.2
The DNS is 192.168.0.1
The Gateway is 192.168.0.1

Have you tried setting this comptuer up dynamically?

Tried the DHCP server in WinRoute, but no luck there.

I think I read somewhere about switching off LMHOSTS - would that help?

Your DNS is the same as the IP ?

Set your DNS to what your ISP`s are.......

Blah!
Is this board moderated by anyone with expertise? seems you people are giving wrong information. Don't mean to be rude..

This problem has absolutely nothing to do with DNS, the computers are able to communicate...

your best bet Dexhead is to make sure your Internet explorer settings are configured properly for your lan- (tools, internet options, ect)...make sure your 2nd pc is instructed to connect to your softwares IP (in this case, the default private IP 192.) and http port 1080, or whatever you configured the http port on the host.

if you already tried all that...any more info you could provide?

Thanks for your help, I found out what was wrong. Damn Microsoft. My friend a year back installed MS Proxy Client software so I could use his Internet at his home. I thought I uninstalled it, but it was still active in the registry. One edit later, and everything is working.

Once again, thanks everyone for your help. :D

I was saying, 75% of the advice i've read submitted from the users is off base...

The hardest thing is to do is to troubleshoot
someone else's problem based on the descriptions they are giving.
You critisize other people who are doing there best to come up with a solution.

You said that the 2 pc's can communicate so that eliminates it being a DNS problem . Where did you go to school. 2 PC'S on the lan can still communicate but does not eliminate that the DNS entries are correct.

IF you have nothing positive to say about the guys on this forum, than keep your comments to yourself, especially when your advice was completely USELESS in solving DEXHEAD'S problem.

Like I always said, there is no sense being an ********* in life unless bada$$ proves it once and a while, keep up the good work.
It's always the miserable man or in this case "BOY" that feels the need to tear down others to shield his own insecurities.
Come back when you grow up little boy.

bada$$, Well if you are so good why didn't you give him the advice he need instead of jumping on the people who where trying to help. So if you are not a wanna be tec. Why didn't you help instead of beinng rude. Other wise don't bother to post. You are just takeing up space. Where someone who could have helped. Could have replied. Or go find a forum that likes your kind of help! We sure do not need it. :o

I can see that, oh well, to compensate for missing out on the action here, I'll go start some new action in the Gen forum, hehehehe :D
