View Full Version : need help with NIC full and half DUPLEX
well i have cable connection, and we have 2 computers hooked to hub, the modem hooks to hub and both computers hook to hub to access the internet...the problem is no matter what NIC i use i cant get it to work in FULL DUPLEX properly...evertime i change to full duplex the thruput drops to nothing....and it doesnt matter about the hub cause i have tried it just hooking directly to the modem itself...im thinking its a windows problem or a conflict somewhere but i cant find any and i even reinstalled windows with no improvement...also i am using the nic i was using for adsl when i had it, but doesnt seem to work with the cable...i even went and bought a new NIC (better one) with no avail..i have 2 de-528 and a realtek NIC when i was trying to reinstall the nic's they wouldnt install properly it took me forever messing around with them and i couldnt even get an ip address with the Realtek NIC.. Now i have a de530 nic and it gets a IP address but it doesnt work worth a damn in full duplex mode if anyone has any ideas please help cause i have tried everything i can think of THX
Cable systems are currently only capable of 10mbps at half-duplex, so you will only be able to run your LAN at 100mbps at full-duplex.

During operation HUBs default to the least common denominator which can be Half or Full depending on speed. I recommend that you check to ensure that you are NOT using auto detect on any of the affected NIC's. One by one ensure they are all configured for Full Duplex at the same speed whatever that is. If the hub is capable of full duplex then all will work. Another solution is to get a switch configurable for either auto detect or selectable duplexity. A switch can mix duplexity and speed with no problem, but a hub, well is locked into one mode of operation at usually one speed. Switches usually have lower latency and are generally considered more robust and desirable all around. The above statements are applicable to the uplink port as well. Hubs don't like anything different, switches are very tolerant, but all Full Duplex is preferred for robust switches since it improves overall throughput.

If you apply this to my first reply then a switch is the better choice for overall compatibility. I have heard of some cable systems that are at full duplex, but I have not been able to verify it. Typically half is the default even if they are full elsewhere since that is the Ethernet traditional convention.

The Netgear hub you spoke of is one of the better ones and a kind of hybrid that has 'switch' characteristics. There are not many dual speed hubs I would consider since a robust switch is probably a better choice for most people.
