Ok can anyone help me out with this problem???
I installed a single port etherfast cable/dsl router onto my network and now my internet speeds have dropped down to almost nothing. I installed it like this. Cable modem is plugged into the router, and the router is plugged into my 5 port hub and my 2 pc's are plugged into the hub also. Everything works fine both pc's can access the internet at the same time, and share file and even still play lan games at nice speeds, just online games have Lag very much now even if only one pc is online at the time... Someone please help I am about to loose my mind... :(

I had the same problem as you did with a router as well. My pings went to **** after that too. The problem was in the router. I emailed the manufacturer and they said it was the NAT. I dont know really what that is but there was a delay from the router to the modem. I went and got a different router that didnt have NAT and now it works fine. Im currently using a D-Link 4 port router and it works fine with no delay. Hopes this helps some,

FYI, NAT is the acronym for Network Address Translation. That is the scheme that ALL cable/dsl routers use for internet sharing. Basically it "passes along" your request from behind the router with a unique identifier. When the reply comes back from beyond the router it gets routed back to the originating PC behind the router. It is pretty simple scheme but reasonably secure.

In your case, seeing that you are connecting to a cable modem, I would double check all settings on the "client PC's" to make sure they are properly configured. Then I would double check cabling to make sure that cables are good. A bad crimp on a cable can cause signal noise which can generate a lot of "re-transmissions". I would suggest you change out the modem cable to the router with a different cable to make sure that the problem does not lie there. Also, make sure the cable from the cable modem to the cable service is not loose.

Make sure that all settings within the router are correct as well. If you are using DHCP to connect to the cable service, make sure that you have correct USERNAME and domain name entered.

I use the same router for DSL service and it works pretty good.

Ok thanks alot for this info Prohidium, I was just about to say good bye to this darn router. One other question now, seeing as I am new to all this. I was going through the routers advanced settings and came across a setting for it to be either a GATEWAY or a ROUTER which is better??? and yes I have it setup for DHCP... And thanks to everyone for all the advice, next time I read more about the device before I buy it. :p
