Hi Guys, I am new to this board, but it looks like a real good one! Here is my situation, any advice will be very much appreciated...i have been pulling my hair out over this one.

Machine 1:
Win2k Pro (using this as my "server")
2 nics (Realtek & 3Com)

Realtek Nic:
connected to Adelphia Cable modem
obtain ip automatically
obtain dns automatically
ICS enabled (box checked)
-internet works fine-

3com Nic:
192.168.0.1 IP
255.255.255.0 Subnet Mask

Netgear 4 port 10/100 Hub
-the 2 computer are on a workgroup
-they can see each other and share files just fine

Machine 2:
Win2k Pro

3Com Nic:
192.168.0.4 Ip
255.255.255.0 Subnet Mask
192.168.0.1 Gateway
192.168.0.1 DNS

Why can't Machine 2 get on the internet???
Every article I have read says this configuration should work....what am I missing??

Thanks in advance!!!

Try setting the client up dynamically or enter in your provider's DNS servers.

Hi spoon,

The fact that you are sharing files across the hardware means your problem is in configuration. Have you bound client for micro$oft networks to TCP/IP on the client machine? What protocol are you using for file/print?

Isn't there some sort of connection wizard?

Luck

I tried setting up the client dynamically...no luck there.
I also tried putting in the cable modems ip as the clients dns (and/or) gateway....no go on that attempt either.

Thanks for the response though!

any other ideas?? this is very frusterating...both parts work (internet and my LAN) but not together....stupid machine 2 doesnt want to see the internet.

I can share files across my network..the computers can see each other in Network Places....that is a good thing :)

I only have TCP/IP installed, no other misc. protocols. I have client for microsoft networks and file/print sharing. It is the default install for Win2k without any extra things added. Thanks for the welcome :)

I have had to put the actual DNS I am using with the internet connection...while using win98 and ME ICS.

My 2k has crashed so I can't tell what is on it now.

Like GLC1 says...

If your cable modem setup does not have a dns setting, see if you can find one from the company. If not then you can try just removing the dns setting from your networked computers, if that won't work, you will have to go competely dynamic and auto etc.

I can get the DNS entries but using ipconfig /all at the command line, but putting them into the client machine does not help it to reach the internet. This is frusterating!! thanks for the response though

Try Sygate or other proxy/NAT software. You may have better luck.

Same thing happened to me, so I used sygate. That is until I had to reinstall cuz of corrupt ntldr or what ever. After the reinstall it worked fine with no proxy...
