LAN Settings "Use Automatic Config Script"

When I uncheck "use automatic configuration script(tools,internet options, connections,LAN setting), I find my speed increases drastically. But every time I open up my browser(IE 5.5) The box is checked again. No 'apply' is available. How do I override this setting of made this change stick?
