View Full Version : PPOE
I've tried to share my dsl connection (host=win2k with 2 nic and client=win98se).
I can ping both ips from both computer. But i cant ping internet ip from client. Does anybody know what the problem is? I dont use any firewall.
More!!
In Host computer:
Nic connected to DSL is ICS enable
Nic connected to Lan, i set its ip as 192.168.0.1
There is another protocol instead on those above, Winpoet (pppoe) adapter. ICS can be activated in this adapter.
In Client computer:
Ip=192.168.0.2
Wins=disable
Gateway=192.168.0.1
Host= my host computer name
DNS=192.168.0.1 (or my ISP DNS)
My problem is not able to access internet from clien pc. Is it because winpoet (pppoe) protocol is not compatible with ICS in win2k?
Please help me.
RASPPPoE (http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~normanb/) is compatible w/ ICS. Also, try setting up the client dynamically.

Sounds like routing is not setup in the Host computer. That is, the Host computer will emulate a router. The Host computer will relay transmissions from the Client computer (transmissions not intended for the Host computer) on to the internet for the Client computer.
That's one way to do it but it's far better to just get a router.

If ICS really does not work with Winpoet. Anyone have any suggestions? Setup Routing Service? Setup correct DNS? Use 3rd party proxy software?
I am trying to setup my network similar to sapenoh.
3 computers
Server - W2K Adv w/ AD
2 Linksys 10/100bt NIC
Wintell Verizon DSL modem
iVasion adaptor
Winpoet 2.0
Hub - Linksys 5 port
Clients - Win ME
Thanks
tonyenli, remove WinPoET and use RASPPPoE.

Thanks for replying!
I just completed the installation of RasPPPoE. I was able to dialup to my Verison service, therefore internet connection is fine. Home networking remains stable (file sharing, pingable). Is there anything i am missing here??
My ICS is configured at the NIC (to DSL modem). I followed the tip from http://www.homenethelp.com/web/howto/ics-install-netXP.asp
However, still have no luck.
Anything else I am forgetting??
Very appreciated your help!! Thanks
Hi tonyenli,
MY network is up already, after i swapt to RASPPPOE. This protocol even works faster than Winpoet.
To see your problem, it seems you need to change the protocol the ICS is activated, instead on the NIC where the DSL is connected, try to activate the ICS on the RASPPPOE dialer on the server.
Go to its properterties, then go to TCP/IP properties, then select sharing tab. Check enable ICS for this connection. Moreover, you also must specify which NIC that you wanna share this connection (that is the LAN's NIC). This option is right under the place of when u enabling ICS (For Local Network).
In the client computer, its easier to use automatic IP. However, in order to use automatic IP assingment from the server, u must be sure that DHCP is enable there. How to know this: Go to DSL's NIC properties, go to TCP/IP properties, click advanced. Under IP tab, DHCP enabled should be listed there. If not u need to install it (Read the win2k support website on how to install this)
Your network should be up now.
However, i found one problem with this setting. On host computer, do not set up your lan configuration on your internet explorer setting to be automatic detect setting. This will bring down the ICS. I dun know why? Just dun do it =)

If you are running Win2K Server, try scratching ICS (since you cant get it to work anyway) and configure your server as a proxy server. That should work. If it doesnt then hire somebody to do it fix your problem and watch what they do, ask questions and learn from them. Other than that I would suggest installing your dsl on one of your ME clients and configuring ICS on it.

Thanks for all your help.
I am officially give up on ICS. I've tried every possible suggestions (from this and other sites), every combinations, and followed every steps from the MS books.
Perhaps I will consult a professional.
Actually, few other things i've figured out. My DNS and DHCP works and that if I really want I could just plug all my computers into that HUB and plug the uplink to DSL modem. Then setup each computer with RasPPPoE. It works, I've tried it. Just hope that Verizon doesn't mind.
Well, its not that there is no other methods out there to share the interent connection. I am just one of those that likes to figure things out the hardway.
(One suggestion for the site, there should be a White Flag Message Icon for Surrender :D )
Anyways, I will now move on to Proxy.
Anyone knows a good free proxy software that works with none-static IP?
You may want to get a router. That way you don't have to deal w/ software or PPPoE clients.
