View Full Version : Splitting IPs with Shaw@Home (aka Rogers@Home)

I'm currently using Shaw@Home. I reside in Markham, Ontario. I have two computers (a Win 98SE Athlon 1GHz and a Win 2000 Athlon 1GHz). I also have a Linksys NH-1005 5-port HUB. I tried to network the two but I can't. When one system is online, ONLY that one can access the NET. Once the other computer is turned on, the first computer's connection is disconnected. Why is that? I've been trying to configure and change cables, but still both cannot be online at the same time. Can someone help me, please? I do not want to spend additional money in getting a static IP or an additional IP. What's the point in doing that for when you already have all the parts to do this? Thanks. hcp75@home.com
Two Methods: Use a router, such as the Netgear RT311/314 or Linksys, or convert an existing system into a "server", which requires two NICs and proxy or NAT software.

I also forgot to mention that I do not want to use a server/client network around the house as well. Purchasing a router is pretty expensive. Is there another way out? The server/client solution isn't that great because i usually do not have the computers up 24/7. Sometimes my sister is online after she gets back from work and I am already online, I must pull the CAT5 cable from my system or disable the connection. (I use the Win 2000 machine.) I hope that there could be another solution. In the meantime, thanks for that suggestion, glc1.
There aren't any other methods. Since you already have a hub, you could get a single port (no switch or hub) router.

Super... glc1 is correct. The easiest solution is to pay for an additional IP address or, for the long haul, a single port router. Either one of these will supply you both with the internet without the need for either computer to be on for the other to work (have your sister pay for the additional monthly IP address cost...lol)
