Would this router work with a cable modem (anywhere on the network)
as the modem or as a router? or something?

Model, make etc.... Looks like the back of an old Cisco 2500.

It's actually a Lucent Pipeline 130 that supports Frame Relay and ISDN. This router is really used for remote-access into a corporate LAN or remote site.
Adam Y, you need a consumer router, such as the Linksys or Netgear RT311/314, for a cable modem.

A cablemodem (or DSL modem for that matter) faces customer w/Ethernet port. If you are going to route from ethernet to ethernet. You need a router w/2 ethernet ports. The one you showed in your message had one (with 2 types of adapters). Like the other post stated, many of the home router devices that are now around $100 will suffice. I have the Linksys router and it works great.

If you wanted to pick up a cheap router on ebay with 2 ethernet, look for a Cisco 1605 or a 2514 if you're feeling adventurous :P

why spend the money, get a 486 with Linux, any flavor, set it up as a router with a hub.
Total cost 55 dollars
