View Full Version : HELP!! Got a problem with my new LAN
I setup the first machine on a Ugate-3000 router with no problems at all...email, Napster, everything is OK. Tried to connect the second machine and I can't get a yellow light signal from the router telling me it's connected. The NIC's are 3com, first PC is 10/100mb 3c905c NIC/the second is 10mb 3c900b. I had to string the second PC cable with 2-25' cat-5 RJ45 ends with a RJ45 coupling in the middle.
What am I missing? Could the cable be bad or the coupling? I've got NIC capabililty on both machines with TCP/IP(I've had both machines connected to cable).I'm missing something, but not getting the connect light on the router seems to indicate the line is a problem. What do y'all think??
Ok...now I've dunit. Both machines responded to the WINIPCFG prompts. However, the primary PC has IP=192.168.0.2. The second PC has an IP=192.168.0.3. I checked the C drive on the primary PC and it says "not shared", although NetBEUI is set properly. And, the other PC is Win95 and has no "sharing" selection. It's probably not much to get this straight, but not knowing the ropes is difficult.
I would try a different cable
Your're right, Dement. Get this...the computer store sold me two 25' lengths of cat-5/RJ45 ends. That's not gonna work as I found out. What happened is the coupling that connected the two 25' lengths canceled each other out...receive/receive send/send of twisted pairs. What I needed was 1-25' cat-5 length and a 25' length of 8-conductor straight cable(tel cord). Now, it's working on both machines. Whew!!!
Now I'm getting problems setting up the file/device sharing. I don't think I changed the internal IP address on the client PC. I've gone thru the NetBEUI/file sharing binding exercise, but I can't see the other drives, etc. Here I go, lost again.

"client for Microsoft networks" and "files and printer shared" are present in the network configuration window, but it's not bound to NetBEUI...should it be? Not sure how to do that since it's not a device. However, when you look at the bindings for Netbeui the above boxes are checked.
Also, do you see anything wrong with the lan IP's...even though they don't start with 192.168.0.1? Thanks.
Another question, what does the "lease obtained/expired" and "renew" and "release" on the WINIPCFG mean?

Once you enable file and printer sharing, you need to select what directores or drives you will be sharing and manually share them out.
To see if it is working, go to network neighborhood, and find your computer (by network name, maybe under workgroup), click on it and all the stuff you see is what is being shared...if nothing is there then it isn't being shares properly.
I don't have NetBeui installed right now, so I can't confirm the settings, just make sure netbeui is not bound to your internet connection.
No it doesn't make a difference what the IP address is as long as the prefix is the same 192.168.0.x
Another thing to do, once they are all hooked up and you can ping each other computer, open windows explorer and type the shared computer name in the address bar "\\delltower\"
If nothing pops up, then the two computers are not yet talking.
Got another problem. When setting up the network on my win95 machine, I got an error saying "missing vserver.vxd" virtual device driver. I checked the Win95 system disk and it's not there. Since I'm partially thru the setup, my win95 PC is acting unstable. Anyone know where this driver is or can be located?? I found three on my new PC, but don't know if they/it will work on my older PC.
BTW, there's a network wizard on my new machine that I used, and it allows you to create a floppy to setup the lan network on win98/95, and my older PC is Win95. Thanks.
