I'm considering of purchasing netgear/linksys router, i prefer netgear rt314 since i have the netgear network starter kit installed.
My question is will the rt314 support ICQ, Napster, email, telnet & FTP? I need to run those applications on both my home pc. If yes, will anyone kindly explain how to setup ICQ2000b for message, chat, file transfer for both pc with the Internet? How both pc can use Napster at the same time mainly downloading songs? Receive emails on both pc? I have read some router's site on port forwarding but none mentions about using those applications on 2+ pc.
My current configurations on both pc are Win98SE with netgear FA310 NIC & hub. I have ADSL escape.ca in Winnipeg, MB Canada.
Any related information will be greatly appreciated.

yes netgear supports all that..
make shure you upload the latest firmware update
second disable the firewall on the router if you want FTP and telnet to work on the internet because the router blocks those by default so nobody can telnet/ftp to your router over the net

my main purpose is telnet and ftp to other server, do i still need to disable the router firewall as i'm not running any server at this point? Isn't it dangerous if i have to disable the firewall? What is the latest firmware & where can i get it? Is it compatible with Win2k Pro.?

There should be no reason at all to disable the Netgear or Linksys built-in firewall. Any of the applications you listed will operate just fine. In some cases you may have to do some port forwarding and minor connection configuration for them to operate properly with the routers firewall.
You should never place any of your computers as a DMZ or disable built-in protections, there are most always workarounds.

nightowl, are you saying that if i want to ftp then i have to disable the router firewall permenantly and enable it afterward? What information do i need from my ISP for setup the router? To my knowledge, they are suppyling the IP address randomly from a IP spool. If so, how can i setup the router with a static IP or dynamic IP will do?

No reason why you should disable a firewall just to get FTP to work. The Netgear router has port filtering/forwarding that will forward data to the machine hosting the FTP server.
DO NOT disable your firewall just to get FTP to work, do some reading in your manual on port filtering/forwarding and it will work fine. If the manual doesn't give enough info for you then go to Netgear's site.
Trust me...Netgear, UMAX, Linksys, etc. have all thought about the manufacture of their devices and router operarting systems to have options in place that will provide just what it is your trying to do.

I have the same router and have used all but ICQ on it, its not that it won't work but I just flat don't use it. The router work very well. You won't be disappointed. I currently have 2 pc, 1 mac, 1linux systems on it and it works great on all of them. ;)

Does any one know how to configure netgear rt314 so that i can use commercial ftp software, preferable SSH secure shell or WS_FTP?

I don't think you have to do anything special to run WS FTP.

i tried to disable the proxy setting in WS_FTP but it still doesn't work, same with the SSH secure shell.
I run CuteFTP without modifying anything on that router.

I reinstalled WS_FTP & it works with the router.
However, I couldn't download software through web site link & also i couldn't load some web site like icq.com & real.com. What's happening here?
