View Full Version : Routers and Napster...is there a problem here?
been told that I won't be able to get Napster with my new router/lan setup unless I "punch" a hole in the firewall and assign static IP addresses. Is there anything to this?? This is exactly what I was trying to avoid...paying for extra IP's.
You have to open port 6699. No you don't have to purchese extra IP's. Sounds like you have a Linksys router. It has the ability to assign static IP's. Or you can leave it dynamic and just boot your computer up in the same order so they get the same IP address. If you have one computer or running Napster on all of them just leave it dynamic.
I have a Ugate 3000 router and trying to hookup two machines which both will use Napster. But you say I'll still need to assign 6699 to what? Not clear on that.
Yes you will have to do that. A router blocks all ports not in use. 6699 is the port Napster uses. I have a linksys and not a UGate so please bear with me. Somewhere in the configuration of the router you will have the options to open or forward ports(same thing). Open these ports and napster will then connect.
After connecting to the napster server would file transferring to and from other users work fine without any additional port specification (besides the initial 6699)?
Yep works fine as long as port 6699 is open.
If you decide to use Napigator, and want to utilize PowerNap, OpenNap, etc, then you will just have to look & see what port numbers you want to forward. I think the most common are 4444, 7777, and 8888, besides the normal Napster port of 6699. It works fine on my Linky, smooth as silk. Just click on the Advanced tab if you have a linksys router, then on port forwarding. Just assign a port or a range of ports, save your changes, and you are on your way.

Whats with all this port forwarding stuff. I didn't have to do anything to make it work. Unless your talking about other people with firewalls, thats an exception. But otherwise most people don't have a firewall and I can download from them.
You can usually download but uploading won't connect. If you can't download either then go into "advanced" and disable "block WAN requests"
Man, this is going too good. Got one connected and one to go. Not one problem with Napster or any other sites. Let's hope that continues. Thanks for the help.
