I have a Netgear Ethernet Hug (EN104)with 4 ports and DSL through Earthlink on my home computer. I am wanting to share my DSL with my laptop. I have a Netgear NIC in the home desktop and a Etherlink III 3com Lan PC card in my laptop.
Could anyone help explain to me how I can do this without purchasing additional IP address' from Earthlink?
Earthlink utilizes PPPoe and connects through WinPoet.
Would WinPoet need to be installed on both computers?
Thank you in advance for all of your help.
plez get a router.. things will be much easier this way... I hate going through ICS and stuffs...so..

Aristo! Huh? Have him buy more equipment because you don't know how to set it up with his current equipment? Come on let's be fair to this guy http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif
Okay, on with the issue at hand. I'm not familiar with WinPoet (glc1 I think has some experience with this software) but I'm guessing it shouldn't matter if you are using the machine that hosts your DSL connection as an ICS server.
Basically, all you need to do is use Windows 98SE or higher and install the ICS service. This will require 2 NIC's in the ICS machine though. ICS will serve as a NAT server and translate any traffic onto your internal network.
Example: You have 3 computers on your network, total. Place 2 NIC's in the ICS Server and plug the one NOT being used for DSL into the hub, then connect all other machines to the hub. How NAT works is this, a computer on your internal network makes a request to a remote computer on the internet. The NAT software places the IP address of the source (your computer) in a table and translates it to the one assigned by your ISP. Now, when the data comes back to the source from the destination it encounters the NAT software at which time it looks up in it's NAT table who the source was on the internal network and passes the information to it.
There is no need for you to purchase a router if you are sharing ONLY 1 computer. Use the built in ICS software bundled with Windows 98SE or higher and your good to go.
Let me know if I can help anymore.
