Incredibly slow network between two machines but not others

I've got a three-machine network. Two desktop machines, one laptop. The desktop machines are Win98SE with D-Link DE-220PCT 16-bit, 10baseT ISA NICs, the laptop is Win NT4 SP6 connected through my port replicator which has a 3com 3C905 NIC and all three machines through a Hawking PN900TB 9-port 10baseT miniHub. All machines can see each other on the network but the transfer rate between the laptop and one desktop is incredibly slow while the transfer rate for any other combination appears to be completely normal. As far as I can tell I've got everything configured correctly but of course I must be wrong. Anyone have any pointers to what i should check? Thanks so much for the help.
