Guys I have a Pavilion network ready and I installed a 10/100 NIC on the Presario. I have a 5 port switch/hub. So I connected both computers to the hub. Led lights on both computers and the hub are ok (Showing activity and link) However, Ican not see the other computer from network neighbourhood. The only computer that appears is the computer that I am currently on. Workgroup is the same, protocol is the same. Pavillion runs win98 and presario runs win-me. I am using the Pavilion as the server and will share internet access by installing Sybergen Sygate for home networks. Guys you wont believe this I have been at this all yesterday and all night and I cant figure it out. Please I am imploring for some help here.

U need to login on your computers (microsoft network)and share something, a folder of choice should be alright. Shouldn't be any prob.

Give them an ipadress and ping them afterwards. If you still can't initatae contact between them, maybe there's a cable problem.

Did you enable Drive shareing? Plus are you useing software program or extra Ips? If not the main server needs two nics. Plus make sure the cable is plugged in to the uplink port on the hub. Do you have file and printing for microsoft network installed? Just a few things I can think of that would cause this problem . Hope this helps! If not maybe someone else will no whats going on.

Guys I may mention that I am new out of the box in this field. So i have to tell you that I don't know how to program IPs or Pings. The user guide that came with the kit mentioned nothing of that. The Pavilion which is the server came network ready and the IP for it is 192.168.1.1 and the subnet mask 255.255.255.0 on the presario (the client) I checked the Obtain an IP automatically box. Is this ok or is there anything else I need to do.

I had a similar problem and finally realized that ZoneAlarm was hiding my desktop from my laptop, even on low security. If you have a firewall on one of the computers, that may be it. Of course, I have been networking all of 1.5 days so I would not consider myself an expert.
Out of curiosity, what brand router/hub are you using?
You have you clients setup to 'obtain an ip address automatically' - this only works if your using DHCP.
Unless your router is configured to use DHCP - there lies your problem.
You say your using a hub/switch - which are not capable of administering DHCP.
You have to manually set an IP address for all your clients. Goto Network neighborhood and view properties on the TCP/IP protocol.
Enter an IP address of 192.168.1.2 for the first client and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0
Give it a host name in the DNS tab (this will be the name that you see for shares)
Also, make sure you've installed the Microsoft sharing service and that you've allowed file and print sharing.

mjpepi, I use a smart hub about the same and I use DHCP. I have for four years now. The only way you can not is if you are useing a software program. I use 2 Ips Istead of software.
