I have 2 PCs running Win 98SE, both of which are connected to a 4-port Linksys router. Both PCs have internet access, however, I cannot seem to get the PCs to see each other through the switch on the router. What am I missing?

Welcome to Speed Guide dkachanis...

You need to install, if not installed already, File and Printer Sharing and Client for Microsoft Networks and bind both to the LAN protocol. Furthermore, on each PC you need to share folders/drives, use a unique computer name, and login.

I seem to be having the same problem. I have a 4 port DLink Router and 2 PC's with internet access working. I loaded the MicroSoft Lan Protocols and I still can't get the computers to recognize each other on Network Neighborhood. Another thing I noticed is that when using Net Meeting, people can see my video feed but I can't see or hear their feed. Am I missing something? Please HELP!

If you want to see if the lan is working properly, then just use a multiplyer game i.e. UR, quake etc... have pc#1 setup a lan game, and then have pc#2 try to join a network game. Make sure you know the IP Address of the pc#1 that pc#2 is trying to join. Within 2 secs pc#2 you should see the game that pc#1 is hosting.

Doing this will accomplish nothing but test connectivity across the LAN, not being able to see each others computer in Network Neighborhood. Besides, you can do a simple PING to test connectivity across your LAN. Take a look at the post by glc1, this is the most likely cause for him not being able to see computers in Network Neighborhood.

Ok! Now if you don't have to share files and/or printers between the 2 PCs, don't do it. This just opens up security issues, if your not sure how to managae it... In order for one pc to see another, the PC that has the source files or printer you want to share should have these settings. 1. Right the network icon on the desktop. 2. select properties. 3. When the new window opens up you should have these protocols installed. Client for Microoft Network, and TCP/IP should be bounded to your nic card. If thats there then your almost done. Next is to click on the filesystem button, a little box pops up choose "i want to share my files with others" or somthing like that. You should the printer option also if you want to share printers. next click ok to save everything, reboo. After rebooting, double click the network icon, and you should see the computer name that has file and printger sharing enabled. The other PCs on your LAN also should also be able to see that PC. I know its a long post, hope it helps though...
Worried about security? OK, bind File/Print Sharing to NetBEUI and NOT TCP/IP. NetBEUI is not routable over the internet so you eliminate alot of the security issues. If you have a broadband connection or always online you should be running a software firewall also. For most users this combination will work just find and offer enough security.

If both computers are on the internet at the same time through your router, then that means they are on the network but not seeing each other as yet. Ok!
