i am plannign on getting a cable/dsl router for my home LAN. i already have a linksys etherfast 4 prot switch and i plan on buying the linksys 1 port cable/dsl router (just so i know everything is compatible). i have a to connect through a PPPoE. i already know the physical set up of the router and switch but i have a few questions about the software part before i buy the router.
1. If i have a switch connected to the router instead of a direct connection from a computer, will i still be able to make software changes with the router?
2. How would i go about setting up the computers to connect to the internet through the router (i have earthlink and use winpoet as the PPPoE or whatever)?
3. Will i have to program something into the router that will connect to the internet such as install winpoet in the router?
4. Do all routers act as a firewall and if so should i keep my firewall i already have?
5. I heard that the router obtains the ip address from the ISP instead of the computers, if this is true could you explain it in a little more detail on how it does it and if there are any special settings needed by router and computer alike.
6. Any extra tips will be greatly appreciated and helpful.
Thank you very much for you time and help.
David
