I was wondering if there was a way to share a DSL conn. through a hub.. one of my friends does it through a hub but he has Cable.

I was going to buy a Router last night, but the ppl at best buy are morons, oh well.. any input would be greatly appreciated...

1) Do you want your computers to have their own real IP's, or do you want to share one IP?

2) Who is your ISP? If you have one such as Qwest, it's best just to get their Cisco DSL router. You can usually "steal" it from them for $99. If your ISP uses PPPoE, you'll need a router that supports this.

I guess we want to share the same IP, it's him who has the DSL, i'm on dial-up, he has Bellsouth Fastaccess.. i have no clue what his settings are.. although i know he has some unusual dial-up, but he connects at 1,900,000 or something like that.. not sure...

I got both computer setup on the network and I plug the Alactel DSl modem which only has a 10/100 plug on it, into cascade port on the hub and use the enternet software the Bellsouth provides and both log on using the same IP address from bellsouth but the Alcatel assigns IP addresses to the computers and the bandwidth is split 50/50. I wouldn't be split with I Router and the Modem I'm told but don't have the cash to find out.

Err. ignore that msg, this is what he said to me.. :

"2 lines come from the wall, 1 goes into the fone, 1 goes into the modem, if i take it out of the modem and into the hub/router/whatever...it won't work cos it won't be on the modem... "

I'm the one with the DSL connect.

It's fast access and it is an Alcatel modem. Here's the situation. I have a splitter plugged into the wall. Then I have 2 lines plugged into each of those. One straight into the dsl modem, and the other goes into the fone. The modem itself has a box in which i plug the fone line into and a wire connecting to my USB port. I don't see how I could connect it into a router with it working. I figure if i disconnect the fone line from the modem box, and connect it to a router/hub/something, it won't work cos i won't be able to dial out to bellsouth to get my connection. I dial the number "35" instead of a 7 digit number, and once i click connect and it immeadiately goes to verifying username and password. So, if anyone could sort all this out for me and how to get it working, it'd be appreciated. Maybe if i had a new dsl modem? Any suggestions would rawk.

Thanks

I have Bellsouth Fastaccess with same usb modem you have. I share my connection buy useing one pc as a gateway "modem connected to 1 pc. All you need is a hub and nic's "network interface card". Win98 Se and MinME have internet sharinh software.

You may not have it installed
Go to Start- setting-control panel- add/remove programs-click windows setup tab-select internet tool-click details button-then put check by internet connection sharing.
Only install this on pc with the modem and fllow the instructions

Hope this was of some help

Ps look into a firewall

Here is how to share a DSL or a Cable Modem connection.

There are 2 ways, I will give the best way first.

1. Linksys provides a router. This piece of hardware is absolutely wonderful. It acts as DHCP server distributing IP addresses to all the computers on the network. It also converts all the IP's into one so that the connection can be shared. Lastly, it has a built in firewall which I have tested and closes your vunerable ports, yet still allows fora connection for gaming.

It is fairly easy to set up if you follow the directions in the book. Linksys sells a 1 port, and a 4 port router. If you have more then 4 computers, you can buy the one port router and buy whatever number of ports you need hub, and then uplink it to the router using the uplink port on it. The router will then be uplinked to your DSL or Cable modem, and the modem to the ISP.

2. Is to use one computer as a gateway, and Windows 98 has a built in program called "Internet Sharing" with which you make the gateway computer a router, and a DHCP server. If you want a firewall, you should install one on the gateway. The + and - of this setup is it's cheaper, but the gateway machine must always be on.

The only problem with sharing an internet connection is if 2 computers in the house choose to play lets say a game of Q3 they both cannot be on the same server, because the server will see 2 identical IP addresses and reject one.
