I had found some interesting facts on the Linksys routers with Unreal Tournament based games. I've installed dozen of those Linkys' for clients offices to get the office LAN out on the network, they work great. So I brought one home when I got DSL setup. Looked forward to hosting a small UT server at home. Soon as buddies logged in, they complained of warping, funky graphics, spawning upside down, stretched features, black screens, just lots of graphic anomalies. Did some looking on the net, found to be a common problem with UT server hosting, and the Linky. The Linksys is made low cost. Great features, incredibly easy to use, but when pushed, it shows it's not robust hardware wise. The hardware under the hood that performs the NAT part (the hardware firewall, Network Address Translation), is entry level.
I haven't heard of it causing any problems when the client is going out, only when hosting a server.
Couple of things,
I never use the DHCP on routers, turn it off and setup static TCP/IP. If you don't know how, basically you have to set your workstations IP within the same scope of the router. In the Linky, default settings, your workstations have to be 192.168.1.XXX where XXX is a number from 2 - 254, I usually start at 101. Subnet mask is Class C 255.255.255.0, disable WINS, Gateway is the router, 192.168.1.1, and DNS servers are the 2 that your ISP hands out to you.
Also, upgrading the firmware on the Linky (very easy). The current version I believe is a second revision of 1.37. They upgraded 1.37 in end of Dec, there was a prior 1.37 released before that.
I gave the Linky away, and got a NetGear RT 314. Less bells and whistles, only a couple of bucks more, barebones web interface, advanced features are done through TelNet the old fashioned way, but it just plain works great, always on, and I can host UT or Rune at home for small games, and my clients don't complain of graphic problems anymore.
