Here's my problem. I was the happiest man on earth. Playing UT on the net is SO fun with a cable connection. Now, I'm splitting my connection with a Linksys BEFSR81. Every time I try to play online, it goes so-so for 30 to 60 seconds (laggy) and then it's like I'm being flooded. I can see my modem receiving continuously packets. My hard drive is then working at 100% until UT freezes and getting me a BIG "GPF" or an "out of virtual memory". I have a P2-400, 256 megs, Xentor 32, 30 Gigs ATA-66. I've formatted my system, no effect. I've try on many other computers, even a laptop, same result. This trouble began when I first got the router. So, I've tried a BEFSR41...you got it...same result. I didn't touch any settings of the router and I've updated the firmware. What the hell is going on? If I can't find a solution, I will be force to withdraw from my clan... http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/frown.gif Thanks to anybody who can help.

Babu your not alone with this problem someone should have a site just dedicated to the "Linksys is Not for Gaming". Im sure there is help out there somewhere. I have been searching like crazy but nothing as of yet. Good Luck you'll need it :-(
P.S. : From reading this board and others i'd change routers

Wow, first time I've seen this one. The out of virtual memory blows me away too. Hmmm...

I've posted about the Linky and problems hosting a UT server, but I've never had problems playing UT as a client out through the router. I had a Linky for a while too. NetGear RT314 now.

First off, I have much better results setting up the Linkys never using the DHCP. I never use the DHCP on routers, turn it off and setup static TCP/IP. If you don't know how, basically you have to set your workstations IP within the same scope of the router. In the Linky, default settings, your workstations have to be 192.168.1.XXX where XXX is a number from 2 - 254, I usually start at 101. Subnet mask is Class C 255.255.255.0, disable WINS, Gateway is the router, 192.168.1.1, and DNS servers are the 2 that your ISP hands out to you.

Are your network properties leaned out? No NetBEUI or IPX, just straight TCP/IP?

Latest NIC drivers? If they let you adjust the speed, "Media Type", try changing from 10/100mb/s Auto to just 10mb/s.

I could suggest a TON on tweaking Windows so it hardly uses your hard drive, these tweaks are useful if you have 128 megs or more, but I'll refer you over to www.tweak3d.net (http://www.tweak3d.net) for those gaming tweaks, there are lots of them. With 256 megs, you just plain shouldn't be getting swapfile hits at all. (that's your virtual memory) Read up on how to lock down your virtual memory.

Stonecat - For the LAN computers, shouldn't the DNS server be 192.168.1.1? That's what I use...

No, I setup the clients with no DHCP, and manually enter the DNS servers that your ISP uses. I've done over 20 Linksys router networks and a couple of NetGear router networks this way, as well as at home. The DNS servers live at your ISP. For example, today I setup a Linksys DSL network, using SNET.NET, and under the DNS for all the workstations I entered SNETs DNS servers, 204.60.0.2 and 204.60.0.3.

Nothing have worked to date. The only thing I can do then is to get rid of my Linksys and get a NetGear 314. Did someone got troubles with this model? Thanks for all your advices all! BTW, If someone need a BEFSR81... http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/wink.gif

Stonecat - I got it. The DNS server is as you say when you have static IP addresses assigned. The DNS server assignment 192.168.1.1 only works with a dynamic IP address with PPPoE.
