View Full Version : Unreal Game Hosting
Help!! I have Earthlink DSL behind a Netgear RT314 Router. I have not been able to get a game created by me to be recognized as a non-LAN game despite selective port forwarding, to opening up all ports. I have read a fair amount on various sites/bulletin boards and still have yet to arrive at a solution. I am not trying to create a dedicated server, rather just "be seen" to other friends and gamers from the main lobby when I create. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

i got the rt314 router aswell
here is what i did to get host gaming to work with UT
1. forward the UT ports (7777 to 7779) to your machine
2. for people to connect to you, you have to give them the external ip address (the one you use to get to the internet)
3. advertise the server
thats how i got mine to work
hope i helped
Thanks Nightowl for your reply, assuming the port forwarding works, and I give out my WAN IP addy... what is it that my intended co-players are to do with the Ip addy? Forgive my ignorance, I've just not had any experience with this as it relates to UT.
Thanks again pal.

they need you wan ip address to connect to your game server that on your lan network...when you advertise the sever it advertises the internal ip which is the wrong ip for them they need your external one inorder for them to connect to ya
hope this helped

if you want to play a lan game then you use the intenal ip IE 192.168.0.X.....if you want somebody to join from the internet..you give them your WAN ip...the one you use to access the internet....make shure you forward the port i told you about to the computer that is hosting the game
Nightowl,
Thanks again for your many replies. I get the sense that this may be an issue which confuses many of us. Allow me to clarify my earlier question to you. I understand why I am not seen on the main UT server, and I know the difference between my local and WAN IP's...I am, however, unclear as to what someone intending to join a game I create, AND who has been provided with my current WAN Ip, would specifically do once they launch UT. In other words, I go to "whois" or whatever, get my current Ip, create a room in UT, call my buddies and give them said Ip, they start their games up and... do what?
If you would once again be so kind as to help me just a bit further, that'd be great.
All of the previous assumes that I have set my router up to port forward 7777-7779 to my ethernet Ip (correct?) prior to trying this.
Thanks again nightowl...

you give them your wan ip (the one you use to get to the internet), goto open location, type in the wan ip and they should be able to automaticaly connect to ya
for you to connect to UT servers on the net, goto find internet games or open location if you know the Ip address
nightowl,
What can I say?
YOU DA MAN!!!
Once you told me what the "joiner" should do, everything worked perfectly!
What do you want for Christmas?
Additional note: do you play BattleZone2?
If so, are there any tricks to that?
Next, if you EVER want to play any of these games together, LET ME KNOW.
I think this thread may "serve" helpful to ALOT of people. I know at least 5 that it has helped via me via you already.
A personal note. I have been on several bulletin boards, newsgroups and websites in an effort to resolve this (I can't stand it when something beats me). To me, one of the BEST aspects of the internet is probably also one of it's worst; that it puts people in contact with one another right away... and you never know whether help or harm will come from your encounter. Allow me to praise you, and others like you, that take the time to help.
I am indebted to you---Thanks Again!!

If not, Happy Holidays Brother!
