I use gamespy to find quake servers. When I joined many different servers from gamespy, I pinged anywhere from 80-120. When I right clicked a server I seen "copy ip address" so I copied the ip address of the server I was just playing on and connected to it through the game instead of gamespy, and then when I played, my ping ranged from 30-60! I joined 10 different servers through gamespy, then joined the same ones minutes later through the game instead of gamespy and my ping was greatly lower!

Maybe its just me? But I hope this helps someone.

I think your problem is that Gamespy is refreshing too many servers at once try this
in Gamespy. Tools_options/ then scroll down to refresh up to (#?) servers simultaneously
this determins how many servers Game spy refreshes at a time if set too high the pings will not be too accurate try lowering the number the lower the number the more accurate the ping only down side is that it will take longer to refresh but your results will be more accurate

Yes true: Lower # of refreshes = better ping calculation. Make sure your internet speed is set properly in Gamespy. If you are on cable, don't have it set to 56k, etc.

No, you can do Server Filtering on gamespy. There are about 3000 quake servers. If you want to play quake 3 ctf, click the filter up top (if using Gamespy Arcade) and it will only show the ctf servers. If you dont have Gamespy Arcade you need to get it. You will see you have less drops (like zone drops peeps) and more functionality with it.

thanks
