Anyone with a LAN, can not host a game of say, Rogue Spear, why is this?

I use mplayer.com and speak with so many ppl who cant host cos they are on a LAN.

Please dont reply with "play on Zone" so ive been on mplayer for 2 years and know ppl there.

WHY CAN PPL NOT HOST IF THEY ARE ON A LAN, and MORE IMPORTANTLY, HOW IS THIS FIXED, I KNOW IF I DISABLE TCP>IP ON MY LAN CARD I CAN HOST WITH MY 56K.

Ok first of all to be able to host when you are on a lan you have to treat it as if its a firewall you cant just turn off. You have to find out what ports your game or program requires to operate online then follow these steps (works on xp, not sure for any other os)

1.right click My Network Places and select properties.

2.right click on an icon, which is called Internet Connection on my computer and is located under the catagory Internet Gateway (note: I use classic folders and layout for windows).

3.You should now see a tab or button in the lower right of the window it opens that says settings click this and a new window should appear with a list with various things beside it one may say web another http as well as buttons on the bottom that say add, edit, remove or delete.

4.Once you have the information on what ports you need to open for your software or game you should click add and enter what is asked.

5.click ok. this should work on most routers or hub but some older NAT routers only allow you to open or forward ports useing tcp and not udb connections. if you recieve a error message that says something about the new settings were rejected or couldn't be applied then restart or unplug your router or try entering the information over again one by one. clicking ok after each one instead of doing them all at once.

If you need to find out what ports your software or game uses usually you can find it on the product makers website or instructions that come. If not, then simple search the internet for the information or ask other users.
