View Full Version : Trouble with Rogue Spear
After getting DSL with SNET and a Cayman (3220-H) router, My son can not hoist a game, but can play.
Any Ideals or help would be great.
Thanks,
Cannot host a game because? Of Lag? If its cuz of lag, it because your upload speed is not fast enough.

No it isnt because of LAG. lol. with dsl somone should at least be able to host himself and another with no lag. so take your lag idea home. I have the same problem with rogue spear. I have done everything i can to figure it out (even contacted mplayer.com / my isp /red storm entertainment) and so far the only info i have been able to come up with is that my ISP has certain ports closed. Unfortunately they refuse to open any ports and alltogether are no help at all. have you tried hosting an ip game? if hosting via your ip adress doesnt work try this fix. launch rogue spear (being online of course) then click on "options" after that click on "mpgame". at the bottom you should see something for network adress and it will have a pulldown menu that says "default". click on the down arrow and choose your correct IP adress. (the game has a problem identifying the correct IP adress with some dsl services). the only downside to this is that you can only host via your IP adress and must manually select your correct ip adress EVERY time you want to host on your IP but, you should be able to host now.
I don't mean to get you down or belittle Red Storm in any manner -- for the Rainbow Six series is my favorite by far -- but the game has ALWAYS had some serious network code problems. I have a cable modem that averages over 300KB/sec with a 4-computer LAN, Linksys router, etc. -- and if I play a 2-person TCP/IP game (not through my LAN), there is lag for the person who joins. Keep bugging Red Storm... I've had a lot of problems with Rogue Spear and the Urban Ops pack.

Out of curiosity, did you open the required ports (I think it's 2746, 2747,2748) on your router? If not then that would be your problem. A router will act like a firewall and block ALL trafic to ports unless you
a: Open the port.
b: Initiate the contact.
That means that you can join a game, and it works (You contact them) but they can't join your game (they initiate contact).
I'm not saying that it IS the solution, (Not enough info to trouble shoot it) but try checking which ports on YOUR router are open...

Check which ports are open on YOUR router. A router acts like a firewall. They block traffic TO your computer unless you initiate the contact. If you can join games (you initiate contact) & launch games (you weren't clear about that) but no one can join a game you host (they try and contact you), that would probably be the reason. You have to open the ports (2746-2748 I think) for people to join a game you start. Check that...
Uhhhhhh No crap, A 56k can host a 4 player game, I meant you cant host Big games if you have a poor upload speed uhh so take ur theory home..

The subject of the Rainbow Six games and lag has been on this forum probably 200 times in the past year. I spoke with Kevin from The Mushroom (http://www.themushroom.com) after he joined one of my games. He had interviewed Red Storm Entertainment at E3, and was told they were aware of the network problems playing Rogue Spear over TCP/IP. Their response? All games have lag -- play over a LAN. I really wish this series wasn't so choppy over TCP/IP... because I love it and would play it a lot more.

You said you have dsl correct? So check and see if you are using PPPoe or DHCP. If it is dhcp, you could have a closed port problem. If its PPPoe, the game rogue spear usually defaults to the wrong ip. I will default to the nic ip and not the ip assigned to your dial up adapter. There are two options that I have found work. Don't host on mplayer(IP only). Or if you are inclined to host on mplayer. Run rapppoe protocol. You can find it on dslreports. That is the only way I was able to host on mplayer with my old connection.
