I live in Toronto and suscribe to shaw@home and play quite a bit of Quake.

When my cable service is working properly, I'll have a great ping to east coast servers, usually 50-60ms with minimal packet loss. But my service sucks bad and the only times I get a decent ping is during the hours of 3am-12pm (pity me).

So basically all afternoon and all evening I have loads of packet loss (50), and incredibly high pings, usually 200-300.

Any help would be appreciated.

If you did check that your side has no problems.. then it's probably the head end..
so phone them and just keep bitchin to them about it or u refuse to pay...
worked for me..
those people want money.. I think.. heh

Well first off, you must understand @home works as the Email operator in Toronto. That means they don't have any Servers in Toronto and they aren't expecting to until sometime in September.

If you are curious as to who's servers you are connecting through you may be surprised to know that in the Toronto area everyone who is using the Shaw cable service is either connected through the UUnet servers or Shaw's own servers.

My point is, when you call the poor @home tech guys they have no clue about fixing a problem unless its at your end. Infact, its probably a lot like Cogeco@home here. Cogeco, or your actual provider won't give you their contact number to complain to them about their servers. They just direct you to the Techies who can do little more then guess and help you tweak what you have.

I suggest pulling out Ping Plotter. Taking a look at your gateway, then do a trace route from here. http://12.7.130.12/

If you do a trace route through that link i sent you, the evidence of the UUnet servers becomes quite apparent.

All I can say is good luck, and hold tight until @Home gets servers into Toronto.
