My question is whether having a slow computer affects the speed (ping/latency) of my Counterstrike games? I have a PII 266 with a Voodoo 2 card and 64mg of RAM. Its an old system, but does that neccesarily affect the speed of my internet connection? While not gaming, I can get very good Kbps rates on web pages, but that ain't why I got the cable modem. I don't want to buy a new 1Ghz system with all the bells and whistles if the problem is really the Cox@home connection. Please...don't respond with "get another computer dude..it'll rock". I'm looking for a solid answer from someone who has a clue and could save me about $2200.
Thanks in advance

On My P2 233@300, I have the same ping times as I do with my current 1GHz. The difference is that my old computer played choppy casue it was slow, and the ping gets higher with lots of action due to the slow CPU.

just go to www.tweak3d.net (http://www.tweak3d.net) and optimize your game for speed. This will hopefully smoothen your gameplay. Also try using the WickedGL drivers. They speed up most Quake engice games for me.

Thanks for the inputs. I've got a Dell PIII 933 on the way with a good card as well, so here's wishing for a relatively smooth ride from now on. I'll also grab the drivers mentioned. I'll let the answer to the original question be known once I get everything hooked up and running on the new pooter.

I'm waiting until the Pentium 4 comes out in late November (delayed). That is supposed to have speeds well over 1Ghz.

IT IS TRUE! With no changes to the @home cable service, upgrading my computer to the PIII 933 has made my ping times drop dramatically. Now I see how Counterstrike seems so easy for those LPBs. Now, for the first time, my kills outnumber my deaths consistently. And, web pages load up in 1-3 seconds instead of 8-10. All this by upgrading the computer. Thanks for the inputs.

Good to hear that ii all worked out for you http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif

fubarman:
The P4 will only be fast when programs are written specifically for it. So fat, a 1.1 Ghz T-bird beat a 1.4GHz P4 in all benchmarks that did not use SSE instructions. A PIII can even beat it on today's programs. Now the Sledghammer on the other hand.....
