View Full Version : Choppy internet play Quake 3
I had cable internet installed yesterday and I'm getting choppy play on the internet with games, sometimes it also freezes for a couple of seconds. I also have dsl and I don't have this problem with it. My pings with cable have been in the 14 to 50ms. range so I don't know why this is happening?
Can anyone help?

Choppy? mostly because of your computer slow down.. ram I suppose but when u have dsl and it didnt get choopy that's strange
maybe you need to defrag your computer and clean it up a little bit..

What kind of "packet-loss" are you having?
If your RWIN tweak is too large you can get increased packet loss. While RWIN can be optimized for one connection... but worse for the other.
(long shot)
What is your FPS when you run the demo001. If over 50-60 this can slow you and the server you are connected to down. There is a way to set max, but first tell me your FPS (from the Demo001).
I tried playing Quake 3 in single player mode and was having the same choppy play. I thought I would try unpluging my cable modem from my usb port and the choppy play greatly improved. Anyone know what the deal is?
How do I test for packet loss and I don't know what you mean or how to test my fps when running demo 001? Sorry I'm new to this stuff.
I tried defragmenting and I have 128 of ram that should be enough shouldnt it?

Well, if you can play offline and still have the choppy effect, it's not packet loss. Sounds to my like you are having some sort of conflict (irq steering maybe). Yes, 128MB of ram is enough.
BTW: To test your FPS (Frames Per Second) on Q3, do this:
From the main menu of Q3 hit the "tilde" key (~), and type in: timedemo 1
Now hit the tilde key again to close the console.... now go to the DEMO page and start a demo (demo001 or demo002). Watch the demo play it's self. When the demo is done hit the tilde key.... the last 2 lines will show your FPS and how long it took to complete.
FYI: The reason I asked what your FPS is because if your FPS is really fast it put's strain on the game-server you are playing on. This in turn can slow your game-play. But for off line playing, the higher the better.
Depending on your hardware your FPS can very from 35 to 110+. But there are many way to increase your FPS. I have 2 CFG's that I use, one for online (47FPS) and the other for offline (73FPS).
Fixed my problem!I called cable tech support and they seemed to think it was a driver conflict with my usb and their software. They suggested I install a network card and run the cable modem through that and it actually works now, no more choppy play online or off line.
BTW: My fps for demo 001 was 63 is that good?

Thats fine. But depending on how you have the graphics option set on Q3, you can always get more (or less). 63 FPS is plenty for any online gaming. Actually you can increase your settings to "high/full" and it will look better while lowering your FPS, this in turn will play better online.
