 ok i have a lucent v.90=dsl modem and have tried messing with the registry and init strings but i seem to be stuck at 26,400 connect speed. The phone lines have been tested and are not the problem any help would be very much appreciated :) thanks - jayson

If you are only getting connect speeds of 26,400 then it has to do with your phone line quality and not tweaking the OS. Your basically S.O.L. unless they rewire your house to the demarc to the pedestal.

Unfortunately, there is no amount of tweaking you can do to bring that speed up. Also, it really doesn't do you much good to tweak MTU or other TCP/IP settings on dial-up.

Yeah, the main factor for your dial up performance is how your area is wired, the quality of your street lines, the quality of your phone lines, and the quality of your modem. The biggest factor is the lines in your area, from your house to the CO.

All you can do is get a good modem, I prefer hardware controlled modems such as USR externals, never a Winmodem. Every apartment I've lived in, and my house now when I bought it, I paid to have the phone guys come in and run new phone wires from the street to the jacks...all new stuff.

See if your ISP has several different dial up numbers for your area.

Once you've done the above, it's all you can do.

The demarc is the location where all the telephone wiring in your home terminates to. From this point it goes to a pedestal close to your home where the wiring for several homes in your neighborhood terminate to before they go to the C.O. or another box that terminates many pedestals in your area.
