FPS = Frames Per Second.

Basically the amount of frames that are running on your screen. You can tell in Quake3 by going into console and typing a erm(command that I cant remember) Then it will show you your fps.

Basically, anything over 40 fps is ok, because i think that the human eye cant really detect any difference over 30. There are benchmarking tools that you can get online that will tell you all sorts of goodies about your box. I'm not sure of any specific ones though. goto www.tucows.com (http://www.tucows.com) and try doing a search for em.

30 is the magic #. Anything over is gravy. When you get less than 30, you will usually start seeing flickering or choppy graphics.

Haha! :D Sorry for laughing, but that was kinda funny...

Your computer isn't really running at any frames per second (unless you're talking about refresh rates, but that's different). When people talk about FPS figures, they're referring to games, 3d ones specifically.

As they kinda said above, 30 is pretty much the minimum before things become choppy, and 60 is about the maximum the human eye can see.

So, you shouldn't need any hardware that can push beyond 60fps in most games, right? No. There IS a perfectly good reason for having something that can go higher. Sure, it might do 60fps in Quake 3, but can it do that in Quake 4 (or whatever the next one is...)? So, run some benchmarks (they can be found all over the place), and see what you come up with!

There is also First Person Shooter, it's a genre of gaming which many of us play online. You may have heard of Doom, Quake, Unreal, etc...those are FPS games. Now many people who play FPS games are hardcore hardware freaks, and use the other meaning of FPS, Frames Per Second, to compare their gaming rigs. It's like 0-60 or the quarter mile races back in the muscle car days, although one fps score in one game doesn't mean the same thing in another game.

If you have Quake 3 installed on your system or Unreal tournament...you can perform a timedemo test which will show you your FPS for that particular game. To do it in Quake 3, pull down the console by hitting the ~ key. Then type this;

timedemo 1 press enter key
demo demo127 press enter key...the timedemo will now start and the game will run by itself in a very fast paced mode which is benchmarking your vidcards FPS. when the demo is done just hit the ~ key again to bring up the console to view your stats! You'll see a figure like 75.5 FPS or something else of that nature which is dependent upon the vidcard you have and it's settings.

this is of course based on the fact that you have the most recent update installed on your machine for Quake 3 which is 1.27h..and for 1.27h to work you must have 1.27g installed first.

I'm not sure how you do it in Unreal but I have seen it somewhere in the games menu system but I just haven't had the need to try it.

In UT, you type "timedemo 1" to turn it on and "timedemo 0" to turn it off (in the Console). You can turn it on while playing the game and it shows u'r results in the top right hand corner (what u'r currently getting and what u'r average is).

in counter strike you can type in console this : net_graph 1 net_graph 2 net_graph 3
"3 works the best or at least looks the best"
and you can also type showfps

but another thing is those fps acctuly help you ping from what i know cuz on my laptop i get 9.6fps in cs and i get about a 500-1000 ping on a lan game when my desk top runs 30 fps and gets 35 ping

i am sure if you dedicate some ram and have a good cpu that fps will improve...d
