View Full Version : web server + lan + internet games w/ linksys
I am currantly doing research on setting up a web server on a home network w/ a linksys router. I have 3 pcs (2 wks + 1 web server). I would like to have the web server and the wks behind the firewall. I would also like to be able to play games(like q3) on the internet w/both wks's (at the same time). What are the ways to do this? I know I can forward ports (80 for the web and 2xxxx for q3) but can I forward the same port to 2 ips(for wks and q3)? Would I have to config the router to forward each game server if different then default port? How would forwarding ports impact the web server and lan? Any imput would be great.

Another option might be to just use a switch and four purchased static IPs and use ZA for a fire wall. I also have seen a router, zyxel prestige 312 that can connect multi-multi multi-one one-one. Would this be the solution? Again thank you for you time.
Dan
You should be able to create rules on the router to allow all the PCs that you want to access the net (inbound and outbound) that will allow you to do what you want.
I can see no reason to change your setup.
Just try different settings in your router.
Note that Q3 may need to use ports 27960 through ?
Make sure that the rules are set for TCP and UDP and that they point to the machine that you want them to (for a server).
If you are just going to play on an internet server from both WSs, then your rule will be simple (if you have to set any at all).
If you want to run a server from all three machines, the rules will be tougher.
You will only be able to set your rules for inbound (to a server) to point to one machine at a time. Just change the port that the server runs on to a higher port (27965)than the rest of the servers and point inbound traffic to the right IP.
I run multiple servers @ times on my best machine and play from the others.
I just point all traffic on ports 27960 through 27965 to the machine that is running the server(s).
I would suggest emailing your tech support (for your router)if this does not help.

I should have been more clear. The web server would not be a Quake server but a web page server and domain ctrl. The two wks would be accessing the same quake3 server over the net. I heard that the linksys router was not able to map the same port to 2 different ips and that you had to have one node on the DMZ and the other node have the mapped port. I heard the the zyxel 312 will have multi to multi nat addressing, is this the flexability that I would want?
Thank you for your time
Dan
I see what you mean now.
Have you tried it yet?
I haven't had any problems with my router doing this.
While I haven't tried Q3 in particular. I am able to FTP and browse to the same sites simultaniously from all machines on my LAN.
This should be the same thing. (Using TCP/IP for a connection to the same server from two machines on the LAN).
That is a good question. Perhaps if I had a better video card for my other machines I would try it. http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif
I am about to host a LAN party soon @ my place and I will let you know if we are able to share the connection to an Internet (Q3)server.
I think that this may all be possible without any configuration changes on the router itself.
Will keep you posted....
Peace

I would like to hear the results of the lan party. I have been holding off on buying a router until I found one that would suite my needs. The specs on teh zyxel 312 seems to fit these needs. The reason you are able to ftp and browse I believe, is because ftp(don't have on hand)uses a different port than web(80). With most 3rd person shooters the port used to play over the internet(27xx?? for q3) must be the same and the linksys or others out there do not allow the mapping of one port to multiple ips. When you have your lan party try and see what happens, I hope it works. Until then I will wait until reviews and specs are out for the zyxel 312. Good luck.
Dan
LAN Party = great!!!!
Bad news though........
Wasn't able to share the cable access to the others...
Tried to change the netport for the Q3 clients and that didnt work. I guess that there is a problem with using a router and having multiple connections to the same IP.
It seems to make sense though.. How is the server supposed to know which port on the same IP to send to.
Anyway, the way around this is easy....
Just hook the comps up to a hub (and hub to cable), then each will get their own IP (just for the time that you are playing together).
This should avoid any problems there.
Of course, if you aren't paying for 2 IPs and get caught.
Sorry......
I'd like to know if anyone else has a way around this??
If so, please answer or post a link to a site that explains it.
(I would still get the router for security).
I hub is cheap and you can always find a use for one.

Out my 386 running VAX (overclocked), out my 75Bd modem, over AOL, through a public proxy, to a underground Pr0n site.........
Nuttin' but LAG!!

This might help man........
Found it off of www.planetquake.com (http://www.planetquake.com)

net_port "27960" set port number server will use if you want to run more than one instance of Q3A server on the same machine L
net_qport "16392" set internal network port. this allows more than one person to play from behind a NAT router by using only one IP address - Questy I

# 2 is the one ya want....
I'm about to try it out here and I'll keep you posted.
Looks like I was on the right track.
Bad thing though, I was trying to change the SOCKS port. http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif
Peace n Stuff

Do you change the port on one of the wks and have the other use the default? Have you tried this yet. I'm still think I will get the zyxel 312, more flexability I hope.
Dan
From my understanding, yes.
The change would be made @ the Workstations.
IE Use port xxxx1 for one workstation and xxxx2 for the other.
Then route packets in your firewall to the ports specified.
192.168.0.x port xxxx1 to WKS 1
then
192.168.0.x port xxxx2 to WKS 2
and so on.
I tried it, and it didn't work for me.
I didn't spend too much time on it though.
I found that just hooking the cable modem to a hub and then the PCs to the Hub worked better.
Like I said above theough, this is not really legal as I was getting an IP for each machine and I am not paying for more than one IP.
(not suggested). Maybe I will play around some more.
Peace

When you say "HUB" do you mean "hub" do you mean "hub", "switch, or "router"? trying to share a Internet connection with a "hub" or "switch" will not work. I can't remember exactly what you are trying to do but I beleive you are trying to give 2 workstations and a web server access to the Internet at the same time. What you will need to do is get a hold of a router and connect the WAN port to your cable modem with a straight through Ethernet cable. Before you make any connections unplug your cable modem and then plug in your router and make the connection. Then turn on your cable modem. What this does is basically resets the "MAC" address the cable modem is looking for. Every networking device has a unique hexedecimal number called a media access control (MAC) which usually appears like this xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx. But that is more information than you need. Now back to the router situation. Most routers come with a built in 4 or 5 port switch that you can connect your 2 workstations and web server to (To make things easy make sure the computers are off)). Most routers that you buy are already configure to be a DHCP server which will automatticaly assign you PC's an IP address, and they will get something lik 192.168.1.x or 192.168.0.x which is a private IP address. To see what IP address anyone of them receive on any one go to Start>Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt and then in the black box that pops up you can type ipconfig to get teh IP address or ipconfig /all to get more information including the MAC address. If you don't get a 192.168.x.x number you may have a problem and epecially if you get a 169.x.x.x address. If this happens check your connections and maybe restart your computer. If this does happen do a post and I can help you from there. Now the other question you had. What you need to do now is access the routers configuration which is usually opening a Internet browser and typing in 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 and either entering admin for the user name and no password or leaving the user name blank and entering admin for the password (once insid you can change this). Go to the tab with Port forwarding or Applications and Gamming whatever your router calls it and set up port 80 to point to the IP address of your server (which you should have set up statically). To do this you turn on your web server and go to the control pannel and double-click on "Network Connection" or something similar depending on what OS you are usein. Once in there click the properties button, highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click properties. In here click teh use the following IP address and enter 192.168.x.80 teh x being a 0 or 1 depending on what your other computers receive dynamically. For teh DNS go to a workstation and go to the commmand prompt like I explained earlier and type ipconfig /all and look at the DNS numbers it receives and put those exact one on the server. What a DNS server does is takes a IP address like microsoft.com and changes it into an ip address (207.46.250.119) so routers know where to route it to. It gets more detailed that that but that should be enough information for now. Then click OK, OK, and then close but that may be different depending on what OS you are using. Now for your W.S. enter whatever port each one is using and enter their IP address (so you don't have to make changes to your routers configuration all of the time you should set them up with static IP addresses also). They can be any number outside of the range your router uses to assign dynamic IP addresses. To find this out look on the DHCP tab of your router's interface. That shoudl work for you so let me know how it goes.
