i recently ran BLACK ICE and it told me that my OWN ISP attacked me and attepted to access my computer REMOTELY, i know that ISP's do routine check ups to make sure no one's hogging the bandwidth but ATTEPTING the remote access my private property?!
I'm enraged, i'm starting to get the feeling that some bored technicians from my ISP were trying to have some fun with my comp.

Possibly, or the address may have been spoofed. Point is, take the log and email it to your ISPs abuse department. They have the logs to find out if it really was an internal machine and if so, who.

Jeezus..............PLEASE..........
While the thought is enough to make you sick......
Please understand that software firewalls look at information in a different way.
Your ISP was probably doing a routine check.
Don't take this as an ATTACK!!!!

The problem on the net today is that so many people are crying WOLF when there is NOTHING that warrants it!!!!!!

I like firewalls, but dammit!!!!!
Too many people look @ their firewall and say
"OMFG!!! Hotmail just tried to hack me!!"

Not knowing that there was a simple keep alive from the hotmail server that initiated the terrible ATTACK.

Peace

Sorry, that was harsh.......
I didn't mean to be a jerk.

Just remember that the firewall is going to catch all of your traffic and most of that traffic is OK.
Just set your rules correctly.
If you still have incoming events that look strange, then look into it.

Just use common sense.... Do you really think that your ISP is going to try and get into your computer? Look @ the nature of the connection........ Learn your ports....
This will help you decide whether the request was malicious or not.

Peace

Funk I don't think u were being a jerk - what u were saying is the truth. People that don't exactly know what they're doing are complaining that people are trying to hack them because they get a connection attempt on their firewall. Sure, some are actual hack attempts, but a lot of the time they are not attacks but are legit reasons. Look into the connection attempt before you go saying that someone was trying to hack you.

And CoolJ, the only time I have ever seen you post a reply is when u'r insulting someone else. What is your problem? Constantly insulting and yelling at people serves no purpose at all. As far as I'm concerned you shouldn't even be on this board. I guarantee u'r going to have some smart @ss comment back towards me, just keep it to yourself.

Never claimed to be an expert CoolJ.

I appologized immediately.
I did not however, edit my post.
It was a spur of the moment reaction.
I think I had a valid point. I think that if people read my post they will spend a little more time researching the IP / port and be able to judge whether a connection is valid or not.

When I look across this board CoolJ, I see allot of posts by you, yet almost none that try to solve problems. Usually you are just starting fights with people or bragging.

P.S. Just a thought.... Spend a little more time in PSP / Eyecandy / Xeno.
I'm sure you will be able to make a better signature than the one you are using. http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif

I have to agree with Funk though...people are ignorant of the responses that the firewall apps give and jump the gun. I had somebody report me to my ISP and was confronted by them when their black ice reported to them a connection notice from my system

turns out my sister had this person on their chat buddy list......
everyone may not be an expert, but there are so many resources out there to educate yourself with , like this message board.

Never argue with an idiot. They pull you down to their level and then beat you with experience. You admins know what I am talking about ;>

I read my Firewall Log about once a month. The big thing isn't "Someone tried to hack me!!" The big thing is that my firewall stopped whatever it was!
(mostly using ZoneAlarm / trying HackTracer)

Just to point out from a Legal Standpoint, any thing done to your Computer could in theory be considered an attack on your system (Ping, Trace Route, Reverse Dns Lookup ETC..) , so unless you have given everyone on the internet right to ping your system, it could be considered in theory an attack

Sup guys I know this thread is old but I wanna make a few comments, 1st of all I only have gotten in 1 fight on this board and we are all cool now, and I brag? well when peeps ask what everyone got on dsl reports or sumthin should I not put down what I got? Anyways, what Im tryin to say is Ok someone gets a computer, there 1st one, they know nothing! But put a firewall up and get the message that there isp is hacking them, ok they are proably not, but what are they suppose to think when they get this message? Comments Like "The problem on the net today is that so many people are crying WOLF when there is NOTHING that warrants it!!!!!!" - It jusy gets me angry, give the newbies a chance, how are they suppose to know there isp proably isnt really hacking them when a program is telling them it is? Just be polite about it.

Is the average computer user important enough for a hacker to hack? They have much bigger fish to fry!
Just stop and think about it.
