Okay, here's my situation:

I have-
ADSL (1.3MB/114Kb actual)
Ethernet DSL modem
4 actual IP addresses (i have proper security precautions) on 4 networked Wintel (98/98SE) machines sharing the aforementioned bandwidth (modem connected to uplink port in fast ethernet switching hub (Linksys hub - assorted NIC cards).

The way i have everything configured, it is superb, and I have no complaints.

The plot grows more insidious, however.

I have 3 roommates who love Napster (I would be lying if i said I have never used it) as well as other IRC-type apps. I typically gather knowledge and game on the internet, and if they are all running Napster or whatever, it sucks up all my bandwidth. So much that i have watched my ping soar from approx. 35ms up to 4100ms on some game servers. Those who game (3D type game - Q3, UT, Counterstrike, and the like), know a ping of 4000 makes gaming ..... how shal I say.....ummm..... unBEARABLE!

Okay, okay.....here's my question:

Is there a way to reduce my roommates' max throughput (such as Registry TCP aperature settings or something)? Right now they are set at 1460 or 1420 or so. I cant remember what exactly i set them to.

Help!! Is a measly 200Kb of downstream too much to ask?

Yup. Adjust the MTU down and you will adjust their max speed down as well.

MTU 576
MSS 536

Is PPP dialup. Try it on your system first, if satisfied...apply as necessary.

Awsome. I really appreciate the help. I was going to sit down and start trial and erroring different values on my own computer first, but this really narrows down the time and brow furrowing I would have had to endure. Thank you, Bouncer.

And if it makes any difference, I configured the machines for direct connection (no login of any sort. no proxy, dns enabled, etc.,.)
