These programs Will Make you almost unhackable to random attacks and virusis.
For antivirus: I consider this the most important thing out of all the other programs. http://www.antivirus.ca.com has an antivirus program called Inoculate it PE. This av scanner is as good as the big boys. all versions of inoculate it including the latest one are ICSA certified. To be certified, the software must detect 100% of viruses in the wild (in general distribution) and 90% of over 6,000 test viruses.
Firewalls: I love Tiny Personal Firewall http://www.tinysoftware.com And i also Like Zone Alarm http://www.zonelabs.com But Tiny Takes the cake. They are both very good at what they do. But tiny has a major advantage. MD5 Signature checking.(this will take a min to read hope your ready) It is possible for a trojan horse to spoof its identification so the user may see outlook.exe, for example, and permit it without realizing that outlook.exe may be a trojan horse application in disguise. To prevent this application spoofing, Tiny Personal Firewall includes MD5 signature authentication support. MD5 is a hash algorythm that takes a 128 bit fingerprint of an application. Each time the application requests to bind to a particular port, Tiny Personal Firewall can take a fingerprint of the application and compare it to the original fingerprint. It is virtually impossible to duplicate a fingerprint, so trojan horse applications don't stand a chance. both programs are free. if your completely new to firewalls get zonealarm. if you know some stuff about tcp/ip and your willing to look in winipcfg then get tiny. (the filter rules on tiny are a bit confusing but belive me they are complex for a reason.
other program: This program is called registry prot http://www.diamondcs.com.au By monitoring important locations and keys in the Windows system registry, RegistryProt will alert whenever a key is added or changed, and then give the option of accepting the key change, reverting back to the original key setting, or deleting the key. RegistryProt's most useful attribute is that it will detect the vast majority of trojans and at the exact moment that they infect/install themselves into your system, and as such provides a new dimension in trojan and intrusion detection.this program also does wonders for virusis that write to the registry.
if you need help with TPF or any other program that i talked about e-mail me at nooneingenral@yahoo.com
