Hey,

i just moved to Belgium and my internet connection was set up this monday but the speed is really ridiculous.
i have an "up to" - 12mbit connection and i usually have roundabout 0.5 mbit. so im wondering whether i can do something about it or just have to accept this crappy speed.
i already used the sg vista optimization patch. additionally i also have wifi at the university and there i encounter speeds up to 1800kb/s.
i know the dsl basics, that the speed can be below the maximum speed according to line quality and stuff, but do i have to accept 1/24 of the advertised speed?

following the "please read":

1. DSL PPPoE
2. ISP: Belgacom 12mbit

maybe its useful to state that i live very close to the border in a small town (node far away?) and in a house with i think approximately 20 appartements.
therefore i can imagine that the line quality isnt the best.
maybe its useful to give several data of router status (i cant really make use of it, but maybe you can?):

Data Rate:
Stream Type Actual Data Rate
Up Stream 192 (Kbps.)
Down Stream 512 (Kbps.)

Operation Data / Defect Indication:
Operation Data Upstream Downstream
Noise Margin 24 dB 14 dB
Attenuation 62 dB 55 dB

Indicator Name Near End Indicator Far End Indicator
Fast Path FEC Correction 0 0
Interleaved Path FEC Correction 0 1066
Fast Path CRC Error 0 0
Interleaved Path CRC Error 2 4
Loss of Signal Defect 0 ---
Fast Path HEC Error 0 0
Interleaved Path HEC Error 0 0

last but not least:
yes, i do scan for spyware regularly (cant even be the problem; high speed is possible in the library's wifi)
yes, i did turn off all other webbased applications during the speed test
no, its not just in the rushhours, approximately the same speed by night

greetings

I believe you are already optimised, getting close to 90% of the line speeds in your internet line.

Check and see if you are located over 5km from your ISP's central office, as a large distance will mean a drop in ADSL line speed, even if their top speed is 12 mbps.

at first thanks for the fast answer. ah, so the data rate is really what belgacom activated for my connection? how can i check the distance to the central office? is it possible to derive the line quality from the data the router status shows?

You can check the distance with your ISP.

Here is a graphically illustration of fall in speed to distance for ADSL:
