Calling all computer security professionals...

I am interested in entering the computer security profession. Are there any paths to take or books to read to enter this profession. I currently hold several certs towards the networking side "cisco, microsoft and novell" but they do not prepare you for REAL life network security. Any thoughts??? Would love to hear from network security professionals on how you began your career.
