ICMP -> Internet Control Message Protocol

DNS -> Domain Name Service

DNS is the naming system used over the internet, its the service responsible for translating www.speedguide.net (http://www.speedguide.net) into 216.167.23.73. Its active on TCP port 53 and UDP port 53.

ICMP is mainly used for maintenance and problem reports. ICMP is a protocol, part of the TCP/IP protocol suite, mainly used by ping.

My firewall has a rule letting ICMP and DNS in and out. What is ICMP and DNS and should they be allowed to come in and go out.

You can allow dns to com in if you want. Same with the other. But I don't. Some sites in order to use them the dns has to be allowed. My firewall is setup with trusted sites and non trusted sites. It all depends on which firewall program you use. Zonealarm and a few other set this up for you on default. Others don't you have to set it up your self.
