I tried InoculateIT as per the advice on this board. It wreaked more havoc than a bad Microsoft OS. I would get random lockups anytime my comp was unattended. A couple times I would come back to my computer, and the screen would be black like it was in sleep mode (which I have turned off). I moved my mouse, and hit some keys on the keyboard... nothing. I hit the reset button multiple times... nothing. This bothered me, as I've never had my reset button not work before. Fianlly, I had to turn off the power supply to get my system to reboot. I encountered these random lockups about a dozen times in 2-3 days. I uninstalled InoculateIT and all my problems went away. Can anyone help me out here?
My System:
AMD T-Bird 1G
128 ram
40G hd IDE
Geforce2 GTS
Sondblaster Live
Tekram SCSI controller
Plextor UltraPlex 40x cd-rom
Yamaha 6416 scsi cd-rw
Generic modem w/dial up connection
Linksys home networking kit (only 2 computers)
The only things running when I ctrl-alt-del:
systray, explorer, and ptsnoop (not sure what this is). I have all power management turned off, and I don't use a screen saver. I leave my computer on all the time.

First of all ctrl-alt-del is not a good way of knowing what's running MS likes to hide somethings that are running from this. And a virus can do the same, msconfig is alot better but still not a 100%. regedit is the best way to find out what's really running without you knowing. This prob can be from alot of things, if you have more then one scanner running in the background at the same time, Goes big if your using norton. Sometimes when you mix some files it can cause probs, wouldn't think this would be it. Used this program for about half a year now and haven't had this problem. For starters I would find out what's really runing and what the hell is runing ptsnoop, ptsnoop?? I know this from somewere pt snoop..... can't recall.trojan virus? almost sure that has something to do with it and why this has some recall im almost sure of this. that's why you had this problem. some ptsnoop exe files have been reported to have trojan virus in them not all and may need to replace this file with a clean one. If I recall right the real file is a Modem Driver could also just need to update this for the problem and some virus scanners have a problem with this file. I think, my memory sucks but that's why I think I recall this file dont know u should check this out and see what all is running.

think i recall now, and maybe wrong but like I said some have been reported to have viruses in them. Your on a 56k, and your dialing out on a modem(like you would with something like netzero) this ptsnoop is the program that's dailing you out, file shouldn't be a problem then but still should check it out along with what's running.
what a waste of ghz if so.

From what I read on Ptsnoop it is spyware for NetZERO. Not sure just what I read. I can't rember where I read it at. But InoculateIt dose the same to my computer. Even after a fresh Install of windows before adding any extra software. Just try a different virus san. Thats what I did.

I don't know why but inocuateIT runs flawlessly on one of my boxes,I have NAV 2k on the other two.the only reason I post this is that I don't think it's a bad app,I think there are some strange conflicts or some other corruption on your machine.

I just installed and ran Ad-aware. It found nothing. I forgot to mention that I'm running WinME. I did a clean install about 2 weeks ago. Is this just one of those things where it sometimes doesn't like some systems? If so, can anyone suggest an alternative?

I'm not using a free ISP. I think Ptsnoop is for my modem, as I read a post here where they said it installs with HSP modems, and that's what I have. Crazyman... I went to that site and downloaded AVG 6.0. It seems like a kickin' program. I am having one small problem with it though. I initially ran it and showed no viruses. I came back here and downloaded the 4 virus test files, and ran it again. It found them all (I liked that!) except for the .txt file of course. The problem is that it didn't stop scanning when it found each one and ask me what to do with them. When it finished it said they couldn't be cleaned, but I could put them in the vault. I clicked on yes instead of "yes to all". It then sent the last one it found to the vault, and said that 2 files were still infected. I can't find any way to send these to the vault. I know I can manually delete them from explorer, but I liked the vault feature, and the help file says I can do this. What am i doing wrong?</font>
well I personally do not use that app,so I can't answer that question, but on all my antivirus apps,I just have them set to delete any infected files they find,I think it's safer that way.

If you are running NetZero or any other 'Free' ISP, then you will never run right.
Use security or delete adware, cookies, etc. and you will get trouble.

Hi bozrdang - try crazyman's suggestion - the program is good. As for PT Snoop - it is not spyware. It was probably installed by your modem's software to facilitate a modem connection. Try disabling it and see if you have any connection problems. You don't say which OS you have but X Setup from www.xteq.com (http://www.xteq.com) will let disable it then delete it if there are no problems.

YUP. Autodelete. No need to keep infected files.
InnoculateIT won't bring your sys down. Is a conflict or config prob.

I really don't think his machine is messed up. I can restore mine. And still not be able to run it. But I can Go up to my sister's and install it .After reformatting and reinstalling windows for her and it will run fine. I would rather think some systems can handle it and others can't. Not every Computer can run what another one will. Work on enough of them and you will see what I mean. I have been working with computers sense I was 15 .I am now 41 and have not seen one computer do what another one will all the time. It all depends on who manufacter them .Ot if you build one what parts you use. Some times computers are like kids one will do what you want the other won't no matter how hard you try and make it.

Yah, I know autodelete is the way to go, I just can't get AVG to do it. Anyone else use this antivirus?
Can always get InnoculateIT from www.antivirus.cai.com (http://www.antivirus.cai.com) [freeware].
Uses min resources and updates 2-3 times per week [free updates]. Has auto delete.

Hi bozrdang,
My configuration is similar to yours so I thought I can help u narrow down the culprit.
I have ME, Innoculate IT and Ad-aware that found several spy-ware inside. My system ran flawlessly plus I also use modem to dial up to workplace to retrive e-mail but use cable to surf.
Perhaps you can try looking at 1) Linksys networking 2) SCSI controller.
Do a clean install, leave it running half a day to observe any screw up in configuration before you proceed to networking. Install Innoculate IT last to confirm.
If you ever had 'NetZero' installed on your PC, then is bad news.
If any other AVs on your sys, remove them.
Might try 'RegCleaner' www.jv16.org/ (http://www.jv16.org/) [freeware & safe] to see whats in there.
Otherwise, format c: [all drives] and clean install of e/thing is best option.
Can be a drag, but is often easier in the long run.

I dont have NetZero installed, and I never have. Whe I tried InoculateIT it was the only anti-virus on my system. I did a clean install of everything about two weeks ago (before I tried InoculateIT). Everything that is installed are proggies that I want, so i don't think another format/install will help. I will try RegCleaner and see what it says.

ptsnoop is the driver for your modem. Try this.... Right click on "My Computer" then click "properties" then "Device Manager" tab.
Go thru and see if you find a "yellow question mark" (click on the "+" sign)
If you don't see any conflicts there, go to the "START" button > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information and click.
On the left side of window you will see "Hardware Resources", click on the "+",click "Advanced Information" then click "Conflicts/Sharing" ; "Forced Hardware"
then close them and click the "+" for "Components", then highlight "Problem Devices" Just look through out the various areas for a problem. It should show up in red when you find it and give you a hint on how to fix it...

AVG will, when it finds a virus, lock the virus away in what's called "VirusVault"
It will overwrite to make the virus harmless but it won't autodelete a virus.
I would prefer to keep the virus in the vault to send it off to Grisoft for them to work on if it is a new one.
Far better to do this than autodelete IMHO.

JANDOENT: I checked the areas that you suggested. In device manager there was one question mark, and that was "PCI Mass Storage Device". That is the built in UDMA100 controller on my m\b. I purposely didn't install it because my hd is only UDMA66, and when it is installed it severely slows down my boot time. There were no items highlighted in red in any of areas of system info that you mentioned.
Croc: I know that AVG uses the Vault instead of autodelete, I like that too. I just can't get AVG to place infected files into the Vault automatically.
When you say you can't move anything into the VirusVault in AVG, what do you mean?
My understanding of this is that when a virus is detected by AVG it automatically moves the virus / virus like script to the VirusVault.
If you still have AVG, go to Start/Programs/ AVG 6.0Antivirus/AVG Help File and read how it works.
Providing you have enabled AVG to work properly (and the default settings are the best) you should have no problems with it.

I have AVG installed with all the default values. The first time I ran it after I downloaded the virus test files from this site AVG found them all and asked if I wanted it to put the file in the Vault. The options were "yes, yes to all, no, no to all". I chose yes thinking it would prompt me for the remaining infected files. It placed the last infected file that it found in the vault and told that there were still some infected files remaining. I expected this since I chose "yes" instead of "yes to all". The problem was that it never asked what I wanted to do with the remaining files. I scanned my system again, and it again found the 2 remaining virus files, but it never asked me what to do with them. Now I can't figure out how to put them in the vault manually or automatically. I even uninstalled it and reinstalled it since it seemed to work the first time, but all it does is tell me it found infected files, and does nothing with them. I read the help, and it says that the scan should stop at each infected file it finds and ask what to do with it. It wont do either for me.
Seeing that you have done a removal and new download and the problem is still with you my suggestion is that you email Grisoft with the details and get a fix from them. I have not had the problem you are experiencing and that seems to be the best way to sort this out.
I am currently running AVG and InnoculateIT PE together and both at the default setttings with AVG set to do the heuristics.
So far there seems to be no problems and I have read in another forum of a number that are doing the same. Only time will tell.
Maybe my next bootup will be my last. at the moment but I will survive.
A few days ago I sent myself the EICAR test strings in normal and Zipped formats and left them in Temp Internet Files.
After downloading AVG I did a scan and it picked up the files as viruses but did not remove them to the vault.
The last virus I was sent was Happy 99 and it was sent to the Vault, overwritten and generally stomped on so I do know the Vault works.
Maybe there is a recognition of the string which stops it going to the Vault. The warning does say EICAR test string from memory.
