InoculateIT by far. Uses minimal resources, very frequent updates and protective.

Question..How come Mcafee Virus Scan alerts me when I test all four files at this site

http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm

but InoculateIT only alerts me when I attempt to download the first file?

Is my InoculateIT configured wrong?

Makes me think that Mcafee is more secure.

When it comes to viruses the only fools out there are the ones that think there safe. They are right about it being the best but mcaffe(configed right, and with updated dats(lot of people seem to have this prob with configs of mcaffe)) isn't far behind. Prob with it, is InoculateIT scans even when you have it off. But at the same time Mcaffe with top safey mode and updated dats will give a 450mhz 3hit(when running in background), and slow up the computer, InoculateIT doesn't do this. I have tested both of these with over 700 viruses (havein to uninstall InoculateIT when tested mcaffe) Mcaffe scanned all viruses when inoculate didn't scan 25(might be the same type as the others it didn't alert you on) out of these. Dont recall the right #s but inoculate was less then 5 (if I recall right) virus behind but that's with the 25, that if it would have scanned would have came out on top. It's the best but the people only using one anti-virus are the ones going to find a prob when it's to late. But if you dont know what your doing using two can be worse then not using one in the first place.
And using norton is almost the same as not using. All Anti-virus scanners have probs with old and new strings of Melissa. Out of all types of test this worm has got by more then any other. And that's when tds was once good for intill they fu...Cked everyone over and came out with the new version 3, went for freeware to timed demo. But is still good for finding worms.

InnoculateIT PE combined with AVG would be the best use of freeware Av programs.
Enable InnoculateIT for the up front work, disabling the email scanning part of the program.
Disable the upfront part of AVG, leaving only the email scanner.
AVG is very strong in it's ability to check out mail and will detect EICAR files in all formats when sent to you.
Hope this helps.

I can't figure out how to disable Inoculate's email scanner, can't even find it listed in the program. Can you please advise how to do this, as well as how to disable the upfront part of AVG. I'd be very gratefull!
thanks and stay well

Inoculate has no e-mail scanner. It is a seperate free program listed at their website called Mailwatcher.

Scoot: Thanks for the information. What is your opinion on this setup of 2 antivirus programs? I've heard it isn't wise to have 2 installed as they may cause conflicts and false positive scan results etc. Your opinion would be much appreciated.
stay well

is innoculate IT better than norton antivirus? just wondering, particularly resource wise because I know NAV auto protect takes quite a bit of memory

I am not a 24/7 user. I am on dialup as well so the configuration is different.
Each time I turn on the system both programs load. After posting the info above I have found that when I turned off the system and then came back to it the next day, AVG went straight to default settings and NOT what I had selected before turning the system off.
This does not seem to be a problem with file conflict and I have left them both running.
The following is from the Help Files in regard to email checking:
InoculateIT Personal Edition Real-Time protection will check and clean any infected e-mail attachments when you open them. You can also Save the attachment to the hard disk and scan it using the main InoculateIT PE program. To check that Real-Time protection is enabled, move the pointer over the InoculateIT PE symbol in the system tray (located in the bottom right of the taskbar near the clock).
The following is in regard to email alerting:
This dialog allows to enable/disable the displaying of a message when a virus is detected.

Display message box when virus found
By selecting (checking) the "Display message box when virus found" option you will be notified if a virus is detected by the Real-Time protection as you go about your daily tasks.
As far as whether the InnoculateIT PE program is a good one I would suggest you go to Virus Bulletin's (http://www.virusbtn.com) Website and read the comparisons done on a month by month basis.
The only way I have found to disable email scanning is to turn off RealTime:File but as this has to be done each time the computer is turned on I haven't worried and it runs ok.
Hope this helps.
