Hey Everyone,

I was wondering does anyone here know of a good reliable firewall? I don't want any software, I already use Norton Personal Firewall.

This firewall is needed to protect a seven computer network and should be able to support Cable or DSL as well as Dial Up (phone line). Or at the very least, dial up.

Current buget for this firewall is about $400. If it's cheaper then that then that's great! This firewall is for a company I'm working for. Any other suggestions that may pass the buget amount are welcome to.

Thanks everyone!

You might investigate the Zyxel Prestige 312. I am.

May be difficult to find support for dial-up. May be unnecessary.

Take a look at the "Guide to hardware firewalls" in this forum. Any of the certified ones will provide you with the utmost protection. Just click on the name and it will send you to the site that you can get all of the details from.

Once you decide which one, run a price search as you will be surprised to find that you may be able to buy it cheaper...

I hae no put in place four Netgear 311/314 Gateway/Routers for four different small companies that are hooked to the internet through DSL and Cable modem. I installed them, configured the firewalls rules, and then run checks on them from hackerwhacker which found them completely stealthed. A couple have been in place for half a year now and I have had no problems with any of them at all. I got the 314 model for around $160 and the 311 model for close to $100.

Now then another good Gateway/Router/Firewall is the Linksys products. They are also at a good price.

But if you have around $400 dollars to spend you might want to have a look at the Sonic Wall and Watchguard products. I have put a couple of the more expensive Watchguard firewalls in for some of my larger clients and they have worked flawlessly. I love the Watchguard firewalls but they are expensive. However I think they do make a SOHO model that may be around $400 dollars.

I hope that this helps.

I agree with Forgon. Netgear make awesome firewalls and they work beautifully. But if your budget is bigger, then definetly get SonicWall since it does stateful packet inspection. Practically Networked (http://www.practicallynetworked.com) Go here for a review on many hardware routers.

The Ugate 3000 has a $40.00 rebate until the end of January.

Bought a Zyxel 312 Firewall/router. Excellent and fast. A class above the Linksys Bfsr models. (More expensive too. $260 at Onvia.com or Buy.com) Does stateful inspection, DoS (Denial of Services) detection and prevention, real time alert, reports and logs.
