View Full Version : IP Masking
I registered and decided to haunt this forum in hopes of picking the brain of people with more knowledge of smtp, windows, and html than I.
I am a frequent user of newsgroups, chatrooms, and bulletin boards such as this one. However whenever I use these services my IP is traced and logged and I find myself bombarded with junk mail and other less plesant greetings. How do I keep others from obtaining my ip?

It isn't your IP that is causing the problem, it is your e-mail. When you use newsgroups, many people use their correct e-mail. This is a mistake. Some less than moral individuals and companies will running programs that automatically grab someone's e-mail from newsgroups and then spam them.
If you don't want this to happen to you, either put an invalid (or empty) address in the e-mail section, or change your e-mail to the format bob.NOSPAM@domain.com. This will confuse the automated programs, but individuals can still reach you, if they have half a brain.
As for the IP, there are ways of "spoofing" your IP, but that is not very helpful. Why? Well, those services NEED your IP to send the information back to you. After all, how else are you going to get the web page you asked for? =)
You could use this free program:
MultiProxy (http://www.multiproxy.org/multiproxy.htm)
Realize if you were to do something illegal that your IP can alway's be traced back through the proxy logs. http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

My fav is to put spam@whatever domain the newsgroup is on. That way it goes right into their abuse department.
