I want to make sure that my network is secure with file and printer sharing enabled. I run a scan on the computer with it enabled and with it disabled but there isn't any extra ports open. Tring this with no firewall running. Is this possible? So what I would like to know is what EXACT port does file and printer sharing runs on?

How is your network configured? Are you using ICS or a hub/router?

If you're using ICS, configure the NIC for the Internet to only use TCP/IP while the other NIC has TCP/IP(for Internet access), NetBEUI(for your file and print sharing), and File and print sharing. By doing this, the file and print sharing is not bound to your Internet NIC and therefore won't pose any security risk. Of course, you really don't need NetBEUI for anything, but in case you're having trouble with TCP/IP, it requires no configuration.

Hope this helped!

Just to add a little to bamafan73s reply. Put it all behind a firewall if you havent done so.

ZoneAlarm has a paid and a free version, both work well.

If you are using ICS, the firewall on the host machine will cover the network.

I running behind a router so I'm not that worried about it. I can't find anywhere in Windows 2000 to unbind it from tcp/ip to netbeui. I was also wondering what port File and printer sharing runs on.
