my sister, who doesn't know a lot about computers, has been telling me about a strange situation with her imac. She says that occasionally she will find that her history is full of porn sites. I know, I know, but she is positive that she has not been to those sites http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/wink.gif. Is there another explanation for this? Is this cause for concern? that is, could this be caused by a trojan or some other nasty. She has a dial up connection.

Also, her boyfriend (they share the computer) gets spammed so heavily that it crashes the computer. It got so bad that he switched ISPs and in less than two weeks the same spam had followed him there.

Related?

One thing I have thought of is that somebody hit a redirect that sent them to a whole bunch of porn sites, loading up their history. I have told her to clear the history and see if it happens again. She is pretty sure that they have done that, and that they are getting urls for sites that they have never been to.

Hey, this makes no sense to me, but I thought I would toss it out there and see if anybody has heard of this before.

Hmmm, could be a number of things. Yes, it is possible to be a trojan, worm or bug. Sometimes bugs are put on your browser to track you, give you pop up adds, etc. Does she only know of this because she looks in her history or does she get redirected to these sites. Could boyfriend like to sneak peeps at some porn sites behind her back? Tell me about this spamming that is so bad it crashes 'puter. Who it is from? How are they doing it, email, pings? Give as much info as possible on these questions and what proggies have they downloaded, (even DL'd and uninstalled)have they checked the registry for anything strange, checked the start up proggies, ran a virus and trojan scan? If it was me, I would re format, set my firewall to block everything, and see if it happens again, but some people hate to reformat.

Hi Ken. Thanks for the reply. I'll just forward page to her, as I don't really know more than I already posted.
